Has anybody figured out a way to customize the "Places" bar in the Open dialog? Most of what's there now is useless to me--it would be very helpful to be able to put a shortcut to the folder where we store our files. Ideas? Thanks...

Tried that... it doesn't appear to have any effect on the Places bar. Should it have, or does that provide some other functionality? It seems that it adds another location to look for referenced files?

SW searches the listed folders in order of arrangement, from top to bottom. Try using the Move Up or Move Down buttons to teh right to move the folder you want to the top of the list.

That was fast...

Threre are no other entries--only what I just put in there. Should I see the folder that I put in there in the "Places" bar? I don't...

You've got caught me at a good time, I'm waiting for a meeting to start.

I am not sure of this "Places" bar that you are talking about. Is this feature in SW05? I was only shooting in the dark. Sorry if I am leading you down the wrong path.

The Places bar is the column of shortcuts on the left side of the "Open" dialog box (My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, etc.). It's on most Windows "Open" dialog boxes, and customizable through the registry, but that has no effect in SW. In AutoCAD you can add/remove to the Places bar, which provides a very quick way to navigate to a folder. I was hoping to be able to do the same in SW.

Once you browse to the folder you want, hit the little "down arrow" right next to the Open button and you will get an option to "Add to Favorites". Then by using the Favorites button, you will get your folders.

That's the closest I could get.

You can do this in Windows but it does not propagate down to SW. Well not in SW2004 anyway. Maybe it's fixed in SW2005???

Add a shortcut to the My Places bar

On the File menu, click Open.
In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the folder where you want to create a shortcut to in the My Places bar.
Click the desired folder, click Tools, and then click Add to "My Places". Your shortcut appears in the My Places bar to the left of the folder and files list.

As a workaround, on my Desktop, I put shortcuts to whatever folders I need to access frequently, then use the Places menu to click on Desktop to give access to those shortcuts. I know it's one extra step but thats the best I have found so far.

I believe it was confirmed by Solidworks that it's hard coded and can't be changed.

SolidWorks is supposed to be Windows compliant, so if it can be done in Windows (& it can ... see my quote above) SW should be capable of incorporating into SW. I imagine all SW has to do is call up the Windows My places bar instead of its own.
