I'm testing this mouse for work. My boss tells me he'll buy a couple of good mice for us. I currently use my trusty Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. But it's mine & I want to take it back home. I decided to try this Logitech... because I know a guy with a new Intellimouse Explorer & the drivers don't play nice with SolidWorks. This is my recollection... I'll call him tomorrow & see if that's still the case.

I've had it for a couple of days now & after several attempts to get the drivers to work right - I'm about to return it to Best Buy. Here's a PIC of the mouse program:
You can see a toggle for APPLICATION SPECIFIC SETTINGS... but it don't do diddly. That's a "deal-breaker" for me.

Maybe later I can tell you if the resolution is better than my Intellimouse... although I don't quite know how I can compare the two. I can only get drivers for one or the other to run simultaneously.

So... maybe I'll have good news in another day or so.

On further investigation - I find the following in the README file...

3.3 Cannot select applications to be included in Application
Specific Settings

Application Specific Settings are only applicable to Microsoft(R)
Word, Microsoft(R) PowerPoint, Microsoft(R) Outlook(R) and Outlook(R) Express.
You cannot add other applications or change the behavior of the settings.

So I guess the deal is broken & this baby gets returned

TateJ, I returned to my Intellimouse for exactly the same reason. MS Mouse software allows for more versatile programming of the thumb buttons for a wider range of software.

I also found the MX1000 wheel button to be a MUCH heavier push than the MS Intellimouse Explorer.

The drawback to the MS Intellimouse Explorer is that the left mouse button wears out rather quickly, causing erratic behavior. I believe I read from some sort of on-line documentation that the buttons are rated for 1 million clicks.

Hey TJ...

Which drivers are you using & is that a new Intellimouse - with the side-scroll wheel?

TateJ,

Are you using the latest version of the Logitech SetPoint software? I just bought a Logitech MX Revolution. The packaged CD contained SetPoint version 3.01, but I downloaded version 3.10 from Logitech's website.
The application specific settings allowed me to add SolidWorks to the list easily. I also downloaded an add-in called uberOptions, which allows further customization. Everything is working flawlessly.

I did download the latest drivers for the MX1000... apparently they have different options for different mice?

I wondered if you had the latest, because your screenshot looks different from mine.

The lower left corner of the window has the option to add any application to the Application Specific Settings list.

Did you return the mouse? If not, you should definitely check out the uberOptions software. It unlocks all of the various options, allowing you to assign just about anything you want to any button.

Who is RLOWENS...?

I'd feel better if I advised my boss to buy 2 mice that were good-to-go from the box without having to download a "hack" to make them useable. If RLOWENS steps under a falling piano tomorrow... who will support his "product"?

lol,

Good point. It worked great for me, but I was motivated to find a solution due to my dislike of Microsoft mice.

Anyway, best of luck with your mouse hunt.

I've downloaded several sets of SetPoint (upgrades) and can use my buttons within SolidWorks. However, I only use the basic stuff anyway and I like the lateral scroll.

In Firefox, SetPoint now understands the forward/backward buttons, which I use ALL the time now that I'm hooked on this mouse. I also love the volume controls and mute on the MX-610. I use that all the time as well, since I've always got some sort of noise happening in the background.

If you haven't updated the SetPoint stuff, the original software you've got will likely behave buggy (it did when I first got my mouse, which tweaked me). But the updates seem stable and good, so I'm happy with my mouse.

TateJ:

I'm using an Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 USB.

Driver is dated 6/3/2004, and shows version 5.20.413.0.

Last month, Microsoft Update Service put a newer version onto my machine (OK, with my permission). The new driver did things I did not like at all, so I have reverted back to this older version.

I have several different application-specific button settings, found it easy to configure using the proper driver (not a hack).

I've found it perplexing that so many SW users like the Logitech mice, because the extra buttons are not easily programmable (compared to the Intellimouse Explorer). I also do not like the heavy forces required to operate some of the Logitech mice buttons.

The number of clicks SW now requires means lots of extra digit stress.

I took the MX1000 back this weekend & was planning to pick-up a new Intellimouse... but they didn't have one. Maybe the "new" Intellimouse is called something else & I didn't recognize it. Anyway... I grabbed a Logitech MX610 instead. I'll start a 610 review thread later this week.

For what it's worth, here's a mouse review I just found while catching up in email:

This is geared more toward the gaming market, but they're geeky enough to get technical about their hardware--so could be a useful review across the CAD board as well.
