1923 - 2009 Beam Design Specifications

1967:
My copy of the sixth edition steel construction manual has the C[sub]b[/sub] equation in it. (Have not found it in the fifth).

1977:
History of Steel Beam Design, Galambos, AISC Engineering Journal, 4th Quarter 1977 (as of 5/8/2024 free to download). Contains an example beam design from 1923, 1936, 1949, 1963 (elastic and plastic), and 1969-1970 (elastic and plastic) specifications. Derivation of Rankine-Gordon formula (used in 1923-1936 for beams) is included.

1980:
Fast Design of Beams with C[sub]b[/sub] Greater Than 1.0, Burgett and Tide, AISC Engineering Journal, 3rd Quarter 1980 (as of 5/8/2024 free to download).

1992:
The Significance and Application of C[sub]b[/sub] in Beam Design, Zuraski, AISC Engineering Journal, 1st Quarter 1992 (as of 5/8/2024 free to download).

Zuraski has some good discussion and a few design examples to help ensure you're doing it correctly.

Code:
Note: The C[sub]b[/sub] equation changed between the 1989 ASD Specification (9th edition Steel Construction Manual) (only good for linear moment
diagrams) and the 1999 LRFD (the twelfth [s]eleventh[/s] edition, so to speak, 3rd edition LRFD) which is more generally applicable.
Zoruba and Dekker (2005) covers this subject.

Code:
Note: Additional cases for C[sub]b[/sub] (including uplift) are discussed in Steel Design After College,
see the [url=https://www.eng-tips.com/faqs.cfm?fid=2806]FAQ[/url] for that seminar series and slides. As well as the AISC commentary.

2005:
A Historical and Technical Overview of the C[sub]b[/sub] Coefficient in the AISC Specifications, Zoruba and Dekker, AISC Engineering Journal, 3rd Quarter 2005 (as of 5/8/2024 free to download).

2009:
Technical Note: Optimum Flexural Design of Steel Members Utilizing Moment Gradient and C[sub]b[/sub], Aminmansour, AISC Engineering Journal, 1st Quarter 2009 (as of 5/8/2024 free to download).
