I wrote this FAQ for the petroleum engineering forum but it may be helpful to put a link to it here.
Note that this is mainly relevant to hydrocarbon measurements and primarily concerned with analytical viscosity measurement and vibrating element viscometers.
It seems to me that there ought to be no problem with providing well priced viscometers for real time lube oil quality monitoring and a real need for them, especially with CBM systems and data base solutions, but despite several companies specialising in supplying lab and/or process measurements of various lube oil qualities, and even promising online viscometerss, no one seems to have delivered.
Hopefully some of what is said in these articles will assist. (I believe I know how to deliver on this but unless someone wants to pay me for that information I regret I cannot share at this time!)
