General Analysis

1983 - Backstay effect

by  lexpatrie  Posted    (Edited  )
1983:
Force Distribution Between the Core and Subgrade Structure of High Rise Buildings Subjected to Lateral Load Induced Forces - Bevan-Pitchard, Man, Anderson, Proceedings of 4th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering, 1983.

Bevan-Pritchard doesn't cite any other published research....

2008:
Design of High-Rise Core-Wall Buildings: A Canadian Perspective, Adebar, 14th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, October 2008.

2010:
PEER/ATC Task Report 7, Report for the Tall Buildings Initiative, PEER/ATC-72-1, Modeling and Acceptance Criteria for Seismic Design and Analysis of Tall Buildings, 2010

2012:
Structural Practices: Backstay Effect, Tocci, Levi, Structure Magazine, June 2012

These links are working as of 5/21/2024. Please use the feedback to this FAQ if any of the links stop working, bonus points if you find where they've gone and include their current locations.

There is a 2015 thread on eng-tips with potentially three more articles. These appear to be dropbox links and may no longer be working. If anyone can confirm I'd apprecaiate it.

11/10/24 - The first link from KootK in that post is Tocci and Levy, so there's no need to post a link.

The second one:

2014 - Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council, AN ALTERNATIVE PROCEDURE FOR SEISMIC ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF TALL BUILDINGS LOCATED IN THE LOS ANGELES REGION.
as this is a dropbox link versus something "official" on a web site, for transparency, I'll leave the link in text versus hiding it for formatting cleanliness.

There are quite a few different versions of this document, the full "set" is here, (https://www.latallbuildings.org/documents) from 2005, 2008, 2011, 2011 with 2013 supplement, 2014, 2014 with 2015 supplements, 2017 with 2018 supplements (no sign of an actual full-on 2017), 2020, 2023, and 2023 with 2024 supplements.

The third one:
Yeah, I can't really find that one either, unless you like scribd, which I'm not fully-on board with. This looks like a powerpoint from a presentation. Not too useful without what the presenter said.
Floor Diaphragms, Collectors and Podium and Backstay effects in Tall Buildings, Maffei, April 2008, Rutherford and Chekene.
Link to the document in what I presume is Kootk's drobox folder:
