    Column Bracing Help

I would really like to tell the function of everything here, unfortunately it's confidential:( By decreasing clearance, you mean reducing the diameter of the holes that the column is going through?

Lateral Torsional Buckling of Thin Beam

So I did some more work on this and got a better understanding of the problem, but am still a bit shaky on this stuff. Things I figured out: We can use the scenario for an equally loaded partially distributed beam, where the simple support is acting as a uniform distributed load, and the pin...

    Column Bracing Help

I have a single column that has a very small radius of 0.13". It is supported laterally through a 0.30" thick plate with a 0.30" diameter hole through it. The plate moves up and down over the column. I am considering making the plate structural and in the realm of 2.5" thick. The column moves...

    Column Bracing Help

I'd like to preface this post by saying that I am not a structural engineer and am new to these topics. I have a single column that has a very small radius of 0.13". It is supported laterally through a 0.30" thick plate with a 0.30" diameter hole through it. The plate moves up and down over the...

Lateral Torsional Buckling of Thin Beam

My force was not right, it is getting distributed over many of these. Each end is getting 19.5lbs applied. We have a set of combs that hold each end in place and resists torsion. This does seem to fall under plate buckling and not beam buckling.

Lateral Torsional Buckling of Thin Beam

I am working on determining if I have any lateral torsional buckling in this beam. I can't really find any equations for this specific scenario so any help or pointers would be appreciated. It's a very thin and long metal beam that is getting loaded on each end with 5,000lbs. It is pressing into...

    Column Statics Help

I suppose there would just be a resultant moment at the base from the fixed support resisting the induced moment.

    Column Statics Help

Hi, I am working to develop a free body diagram of a column but running into some issues here specifically with the moments. I have a 1m long solid cylindrical column that has a fixed base, and goes through a set of plates with holes at 0.2 and 0.8m. There are two distributed forces action on...

    Lignin Carbon Fiber

I've been doing some research into lignin as a precursor for carbon fiber manufacturing. Lignin seems to be an almost entirely random "polymer" with billions of molecule combinations. There's been some work into trying to bring it to market in the 60's and 70's, but to my knowledge it is not...

Horizontal to Vertical Hinged Hot Isostatic Press

@EdStainless The facility where we are installing the new HIP is very limited on overhead space, the study I am performing is to find a solution that does not require raising the roof or digging into the floor. The answer to this problem could very well be that you can't hinge the HIP or have...

Horizontal to Vertical Hinged Hot Isostatic Press

I am working on a feasibility study for a high pressure horizontally oriented HIP (hot isostatic press) and need some help with the thought experiment and general design. This machine will need to have the following characteristics - Pressure: 15,000psi | Temp: 800°C | Length: 84in. | Diameter...

    High Pressure Horizontal Autoclave Feasability

I have found four American manufacturers of HIPs: Quintis, AIP, EPSI, and PTI. Do you know of anymore in the United States that make products like this? asalisbury EIT Mechanical Aerospace Composites

    High Pressure Horizontal Autoclave Feasability

Howdy Everyone, I am working on a feasibility study for a high pressure horizontally oriented autoclave, or HIP (hot isostatic press) and need some help with the thought experiment and general design. This machine will need to have the following characteristics - Pressure: 15,000psi | Temp...
