Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

The architect says there is no room for a header between openings and the bottom of trusses. They propose installing a continuous header and attaching scissor trusses to its side (with a hanger perhaps). Do you see any issues with such a solution? I can only think of properly attaching the...

Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

gte447f, This is exactly what I thought and there is no confusion here. I was asking about any special requirements to address in the area where wall sheathing, roof sheathing and scissor truss meet. Thank you all for your input.

Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

Thanks for the responses. I think I agree with the statement that it is safer to require a certain acceptable truss horizontal deflection from the manufacturer (1/2" max.) Regarding a detail for properly transferring the force from the wall onto the scissor truss, do you have any tips?

Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

What would you recommend to pin the truss to the wall? I usually go with H2.5A ties plus blocking in between trusses, or a35 angles.

Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

Thanks for the replies. So, the truss supplier will keep the deflection to 1/2" and the EOR assumes that the walls will not resist lateral loads at the top? What would you recommend to do for the wall lateral deflection due to wind? The shear walls will be approx. 35ft apart. See below.

Roof without flat ceiling - how to resist thrust?

Hello, I am wondering if there is a way to utilize wood trusses like in the picture below. The owners do not want ceiling joists and for the sake of the discussion, let's say that a ridge beam is not an option (the span would be over 35 feet). I am worried about the thrust, as once I tie the...

Deck joists attached to floor joists

Celt83, That sounds like a good idea. Would you attach the new beam to adjacent TJIs with top flange hangers?

Deck joists attached to floor joists

ENG16080, Double channels connection is not the worst idea, thanks. Conservatively assumed a person standing at the tip. Otherwise, there is only dead + snow (balanced + drift). XR250, As I said, I modeled it as each bolt is a spring support. Thank you,

Deck joists attached to floor joists

This is what I came up with. The 4" channels don't work for deflection. I modeled the bolts as spring supports (100 lbs capacity / (1/16" deflection) = 19.2 k/ft). See below, any input will be greatly appreciated. I pasted images instead of attachment, as requested. Thanks

Deck joists attached to floor joists

    1. I could switch to C-channel, but 4" depth max. 2. The floor is existing and the joists are 9.5" TJI @ 16"o.c. The original concept was to attach the canopy tubes to the existing parapet wall, but I am worried the parapet will not withstand the load. The load is +- 250 - 300 lbs at the tip...

Deck joists attached to floor joists

Thanks for all your replies. Attached is the actual situation. The HSS canopy tube is attached to the TJI floor joist. 1. I agree with small-diameter screws, but due to the steel tube, I think I need to go with bolts. 2. When I model B1 B2 B3 as supports, B1 receives crazy (and unrealistic)...

Deck joists attached to floor joists

Hello everyone, Every once in a while I need to design a deck with joists fastened to the side of floor framing. See attached. I am wondering what your approach would be to come up with shear forces in bolts B1, B2, and B3. See attached and thank you for your input.

    Steel stringer support at top

Hello, I am looking for opinions about the proper support condition at the top of the stringer. I ran 3 analyses of the same typical steel stringer: HSS tube with 6" bent at the top and bottom. The bottom has a base plate with 4 anchor bolts and a foundation. The top of the stringer will most...

Aluminum anchor bolts and aluminum pans

Hello everyone, I am working on a project (US market) where only aluminum products can be used. I am trying to find any information on the following: 1. Aluminum wedge anchors - manufacturer, specifications, testing ? 2. Solid aluminum pans/sheets - I am looking for a solid pan (to hold water...
