    Toe nailing rafters

Can you point me where that is? If NDS has values for toe nailing, I don't see how that is not allowed?

    Toe nailing rafters

Yes I was thinking like that too.. but the rafters are only 5 ft long, that's why I am second guessing myself.

    Toe nailing rafters

So you also dislike toe nailing?

    Toe nailing rafters

For the detail I am doing, the wood on top of the steel will not be a nailer. I only nail the plywood to the 2x8 rafters. So if I use hangers, it will be face mount hangers. The roof is 6:12 slope. If we do the notch you were suggesting, they have to notch both top and bottom. They have...

Hmm.. good idea XR250! May have to do that.

    Toe nailing rafters

I have a project where I have those crazy slim overhang roof. It cantilevers 8.5 ft with 75 psf snow load. I end up using W8 steel beam spaced at 5 ft on center (3.5 ft projected with the slope). Then I have 2x8 spaced at 24" o.c. that connect from steel bm to steel bm. I am considering...

    How to fix this?

just throwing out ideas. If you use HU210 and redo the connection, you can weld the part touching the steel (bottom and top flange). Perhaps add plywood spacer to make the hanger more flat. HU210 also projects farther so the joists will sit more on the hanger.

    How to fix this?

Is this a remodel job where you are removing wall and install steel beam flush?

Wood Header/Beam out of plane (F2) connection

Sometimes I specify concealed face mount hanger to the king stud and not use jack stud. There is no published value for load going that direction though but it would be a lot stronger than end nailing to the grain. I feel like the capacity shouldn't be that far off from the vertical load capacity?

    Stone veneer covered deck column

You dont think it will rot inside the pocket?

    Stone veneer covered deck column

Do you guys have a detail you can share how you frame deck column with natural stone veneer (6" thick including mortar) all the way to the top and above the deck? I never like this scenario and it is very hard to transition from concrete pier, to column to wood with stone around it. In the...

Fire place and chimney with stone veneer framing

For example, shall I stop and start the framing before and after the rafter? Try to balloon frame it? Mix? Trying to figure out the best detail. Balloon framing, the studs get really long and may have to go with engineered wood.

Fire place and chimney with stone veneer framing

Lets say you have 6:12 shed roof. In the middle this roof you have a fireplace. How do you typically frame this? The fireplace will have thin set stone veneer, but the chimney above will be about 7 ft tall and will have heavy stone veneer. The chimney framing and fireplace framing will be...

How often are y’all doing any calcs for single-family residential?

I do calc but I dont submit them. I have the calculation files but I dont create a calculation bundle with title block and table of content. The counties don't require the calcs. They just want stamped drawings.
