Ed Baumgartner was a South African aeronautical engineer who was drawn to the novel and the unique. He worked for the SAAF in his early career, then moved to civil aviation supporting structural modification projects on many aircraft types. His unique insight and creativity, plus his desire to explore, let him to Airbus in Europe, where he devoted years to the development of the Airbus A350. His attention to detail is apparent in his self-published engineering textbook, shared with his students and protegés. Ed passed away in 2018 but we hope there are plenty of balsa models where he is now.
