Cracking in Freshly Placed Concrete Columns

I appreciate the responses which reinforce the message we have already delivered to them. We are getting resistance from both the Contractor and to a certain degree the Client so wanted to make sure we were not off base.

    Slab cracking - opinions requested

Appears to be some delamination of the concrete as well, what was the specified and tested air content in the mix?

Cracking in Freshly Placed Concrete Columns

We have a project where upon removal of the forms there was one column that had significant voids at the top. Apparently, they had to use a sonotube form on this column and it blew out at the bottom during placement. The other columns though are also showing cracking patterns that I have not...

    Weathered wood framing

If framing within the metal plate connected wood trusses are the concern, then I recommend having the specialty structural engineer who sealed the truss design drawings assess them. WoodWorks may be of some assistance in finding an expert but I would not be too hopeful.

    OSHA Mobile Platform

thread507-103228 We are designing a mobile platform (see attachment). The client has indicated that the platform will be used by maximum of (2) workers at a time. We are intending to use 300 lbs to account for a worker + tools. OSHA requires we design the platform for 4x the maximum intended...

    Precast Plank Grout

There is continuous grout and rebar in the keyways between adjacent panels. Panels are 4' wide. Below is plan view showing this grouted keyway. We have directed them to remove the masonite board, our concern was how much grout will follow into the hollowcore voids. Our detail specified a plug...

    Precast Plank Grout

Please see the photo from the pre-pour and out typical detail below. We had specified to use core plug to keep the grout from penetrating into the cores. The contractor did not order these in time and is now proposing to use masonite board as shown in the picture below. We believe there is an...

    Canopy Load Combinations

We recently received a deferred submittal for an aluminum canopy that is cantilevering from our our structure (HSS girt), see image below. In the Design Criteria, the signed and sealed submittal had the following notes: "Roof maintenance not permitted during design event(s) as roof live...

Composite Deck on Non-Composite Steel Beams or Joists

@dik thanks that did answer the question. Just wanted to make sure as I do not see it often from other firms.

Composite Deck on Non-Composite Steel Beams or Joists

In our market composite steel beams with concrete on composite metal deck is a common framing system, however it's cost increases dramatically on smaller projects (footprint less than ~10,000 SF) due to many reasons with one being the cost of renting the Nelson stud guns to install the shear...

Slender Underground Storage Tank (Wet Well for Lift Station)

The AHJ does not allow RCP for wet wells over 6'Ø. I have spoken with a few contractors in the area who have done it this way albeit for much larger tanks. They cast the sections in a starter pit and then sink them by excavating out the interior. This is still referred to as the caisson...

Slender Underground Storage Tank (Wet Well for Lift Station)

I am designing an 8'Ø x 26' deep x 10" thick wet well. I have studied the PCA publication "Circular Concrete Tanks Without Prestressing" however the H^2/Dt values provided in the charts don't come close to meeting my calculated value (89.3). Is there another resource or is my only option to use...

Loose Lintel - Anchor into Backup Wall

Follow up questions, at what opening width or height would you not be comfortable relying on the brick ties?

Loose Lintel - Anchor into Backup Wall

I have a 8'0" wide double door with a loose lintel above that is supporting brick veneer. The backup wall is CMU. Should I anchor the loose lintel into the masonry lintel in order to transfer suction forces or it is standard practice to rely on the brick ties? Is another option to design the...

    Value of Young Engineer

Thanks Swiver. I agree, I will not be ready to venture out on my own after passing the PE. I feel that I would need around 8 of experience before even considering it.
