Hello,
I am running the previous Abaqus model with changed loading magnitudes. Up to steps 8 my analysis can't converge. I have tried to use *controls to adjust the convergence criteria. But I am not familiar with it. I got the warning and error messages saying too many attempts. My input step...
Hello Greglocock,
I searched some discussion on this topic but can't see any conclusion on the effects of friction and wire rope stiffness. Do you have any references and links that has concluded some scientific formula or FEA to determine the wrapping pressure of multilayer wire rope on drum...
Hello GregLocock & 3DDave,
Have done the the hand calculations. Yes, you are right. It will assume a sheet of material under tension and lead to conservative results. In fact this will be very conservative if we now consider multi-layers piling up to 10 layers. There are no proven formula for...
Hello IR stuff,
Yes, that is hoop stress induced by the wrapping pressure of the wire rope. It can only be assumed to be uniform pressure by theoretical calculation. However, in practice due to friction and wire rope stiffness the pressure will be less and less as the layer and coil numbers...
Hello Everyone,
Uniform wrapping pressure induced by one layer of wire rope wounding around the drum can be estimated as
P=F/Rm b
P is the line pull tension at each th layer
Rm is the radius of turns of wire rope on drum (PCD/2)
b is the wire rope diameter
This assumes uniform pressure...
Recently found the latest study on wrapping pressure on winch drum subjected to multi-layers wire rope tension.

Hello all,
3DDAVE
Yes. If using the formulae to calculate the wrapping pressure accumulated up to 15 layers, it can be seen that the there is less effects as it goes outer layer...However, the wrapping pressure is high at 2nd and 3rd layers when we sum up....and this results in very high hoop...
Hi GregLocock (Automotive),
In another forum thread, i saw you mentioned you built a spreadsheet model to estimate the wrapping pressure based on the axial and tangential stiffness, without using the formulae? How did you come out with that? Please can you advise...thank you.
Hello all,
Many thanks for replies.
EngineerTex (Mechanical)---
We are actually doing the FEA to check the stress in the existing winch design (heavy winch 250t at 1st layer and 140t at 8th layer). Will not go to buckling and stability check yet. So we just simply apply the wrapping pressure...

Hello all,
This might be the unsolved problem in the industry.
Came across the problem of solving the stresses in the winch drum subjected to multi-layers of wire rope. I am using FEA to model the scenario and requires the compression pressure when it is subjected to wire...
