Axial play double taper bearing / trailer axle

tr1ntx, your post brings something to light that is likely a source of confusion between the OP question and most of the responses. On a pair of opposed tapered roller bearings, like a trailer hub, the axial play is not set by machining the hub or spindle. It is set by tightening the nut. The...

    Allowable checks in wood beams

You might want to call the particular grading agency whose name is on the grade stamp. I don't know that all grading agencies conform to the exact same rules for timber and beam grading. They can probably email you the particular rules you are looking for. They also should offer some sort of...

Plaster ceiling deflection limit, when does it fail?

I think the anwer will be a resounding "I don't know". However, you might consider ceiling panels instead. They actually would probably fit the craftsman flavor of the house better and you eliminate the potential cracking issue...

    shop drawing connection details

The best teacher is repetition. Drafting is like any other language where learning the rules is just the beginning. The only option you might have for a shortcut is to find a similar drawing from which you can hijack the details. ...but then again, that's not a photocopy of the Mona Lisa...

    shop drawing connection details

I'm going to hazard a guess (correct me if I'm wrong) that you are working on some platforms where full strength connections are not required, and as such there could be a tendency to over engineer and over detail. A typical weld detail for each joint type would suffice if you feel the project...

ACI 318 Water / Cementitious Ratio - Free Water?

Regarding slump as a measure of w/c ratio: An overly high ratio (too much water) can be "corrected" with sand. Ask any kid with a bucket at the beach...

    evaluation of damaged steel columns

Sonotube, concrete, yellow paint. While you are installing them on the damaged columns, you can put some on the ones that haven't been hit...yet.

    Concrete Beam Design

As ToadJones suggested above, it is a beam unless it can't be. If you have the depth at center to be a beam, it's a beam. Like a scissor truss, just because it has the shape of an arch doesn't make it one (and that's a good thing).

Point load on pipe wall exterior

Thanks for the replies, guys. Here's some better info: 6" sch 80 pipe (.430 wall). (2) cam rollers, 1 1/4" diameter x 3/4" length mounted at 90 degree separation along pipe circumerence. Max load per roller of 2,600 lb towards pipe center. Rollers are 20" below the top of pipe (nearest...

Point load on pipe wall exterior

By what method could a radial load on a pipe, towards the pipe center, be modeled to determine stress in the pipe? Specifically, this is in a jib crane using cam rollers on the pipe as the support for the jib.
