Where are you seeing this? I can't find this specific spacing anywhere in the IRC tables.
This must be a table specific to your state? I can't find this table in the IRC. Your wall is taller than 4' so I don't think the table would apply here.
My opinion is that if the city is asking an...
Earlier you were talking about the benefits/need for the strap such as a chord force that overwhelms the post cap, but here I guess you're saying that you'd rather not have to have the strap at all if there won't be a tension force to resolve (which is basically what XR250 said earlier)?
Thanks...
I've posted a couple of pics below that I found that sort of show what I'm thinking about. The first one is from Boise Cascade in their "Common Details" document. I'm probably thinking about this totally wrong but let's say you have a 20' wide deck where you have posts in the corners and then a...
Hi everyone, I was perusing Woodwork's library of details on their site and came across this one shown below. I'm considering the wisdom of the strap they show on the side of the beam. If the beam is spliced over the column then as the beams attempt to rotate won't the strap be in tension and...
Interesting thoughts on partners. As I left my previous employer I thought that entering into this venture without a partner was probably a bad move. You all have brought up some great points that I hadn't fully considered about what it would mean to have a partner.
Nice to hear this. Although...
Thanks everyone for the replies.
My wife suggested this very thing to me a couple of days ago. Guess I really should look into it. I appreciate the advice coming from someone older than me. The older I get the more I realize how important it is to talk to people with more life experience than...
Hi everyone, hoping to get some input on a career decision that is eating me up inside. I'll try to be as succinct as possible.
I am in my early 30s. I worked for a small firm from the time I was in school until middle of last year doing strictly residential work. Wasn't making tons of money...
Hi all,
An interesting one here, at least I think it is. I'm working on a home that involves "Cape Dutch" architecture, one of the features being these gable end walls that stick up above the roof plane (see picture below). My thought is that those gable walls should be balloon framed and then...
Thanks phamENG. I guess my struggle with what SJBombero and you are saying is that if the straps will indeed loosen over time then why would we ever use straps at all in any application? If the wood is going to shrink then it'll shrink, and there's nothing we can do to make that strap stay taut...
Since the rafters are spaced at 16" I was thinking that I could position the straps between rafters so they could run all the way down the side of the beam. SJBombero mentioned that the straps would loosen as the wood shrinks, but I'm not sure if that's something I should be overly concerned about
Hi everyone, thanks for reading. I am working on a residential project with a southwest-style flat roof with parapets. One area of the roof is going to be usable space with stairs going up to it on the exterior of the home. Below this area is a deck that you can walk out onto from the kitchen. I...
I'd think you need the extra meat to get the shear load into the sill plate. The anchor bolts with a single plate work fine, but getting the shear into the sill from the wall itself is the challenge. If the shear load is 1800 lb. then you'd have 900 plf into a 2' wide panel which I don't think a...
