    AISC Seismic Design Manual Diaphragm

Hello, please see the picture attached. A page from example 8.4 of AISC Seismic Design Manual Pg8-21. I'm trying to understand what does the statement below the calculation mean: "Note a mechanism needs to be provided to transfer the force from the slab reinforcement into the structure" ?

    Built Up section Weld size

Apologies, I was not clear, it's a part of a lateral system BRB . The section is used for a lateral column. It would have significant axial load, around 12-16000 kips, its a 27story building. Please let me know the exact procedure ? Any example calculation would be of great help too. Thank you.

Design for Fire conditions per AISC

Hi, Does anyone know if we can ignore resistance factor (Φ=0.9) in LRFD when designing steel members for fire conditions per Appendix 4? If so can someone point me out the exact reference?

Software to design Multistory Concrete Columns

@ KootK: What is S-concrete? I do it the old school way calculating trib areas from drawings for each column and then designing them separately in SP Column. Okay good to know ETABS is good for design of RC Columns.

Software to design Multistory Concrete Columns

@KootK : Have you used ETABS? Have you ever found any issues with the software?

Software to design Multistory Concrete Columns

Hello, I am looking for a software that is reliable enough to do multi story RC Columns rather than going old school and calculating trib areas from drawings for each column and then designing them separately in SP Column. Any inputs or thoughts shared would be beneficial ? Any good or bad...

    Steel gravity columns design

@oopenhegan: I really didn't understand. Is the question towards me? I am analyzing my building just by modal analysis ( linear dynamic analysis).

    RAM SS Gravity column Design

@joshplum: I agree that Equation H1-3 governs but the in-plane instability is checked by equation H1-1a and I can't see (8/9)*Mrx/Mcx ( which comes around 0.15) been added to Pr/Pc (0.819) which gives a DCR of 0.97 which is greater than what we get from Equation H1-3.

    RAM SS Gravity column Design

The gravity column design interaction equation H1-1a in RAM SS does not account for the Mux/(0.9Mnx) in the unity equation. Why is that ? Please let me know if someone has faced the same issue. Thank...

    Thermal Analysis in Risa 3D

Hey guys, I'm doing a thermal analysis in Risa 3D. I have a couple of questions : 1. What direction is the thermal load applied in RISA? I know it has "T" direction symbol to apply a thermal load. But when applied in the model it shows that the load is applied in the downward direction. Can...

    Deformation response spectrum

Hey, I am wondering why the deformation response is the same for buildings higher than 10 secs natural period of vibration. Anyone could help? Thank youhttps://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=58f241b2-1c43-4481-a4ed-65969f01f1b4&file=Capture.PNG

    Steel gravity columns design

@KootK Thank you, I agree with your explanation. But if that is the case then why do we check drift induced moments for gravity concrete columns in a Slab only system without beams where the main lateral force resisting system is Shear wall ?
