I have seen it done both ways. But I agree I would use just the sill plate under the segment. If you used the full length of the sill then it would be a cord and I am don't believe that in practice you can make that assumption.

2305.3.8 allows shear capacities to be added when applied to both faces of the wall. Does the limitation of 350 plf apply to each face separately? In other words, can I go up to 700 plf without requiring 3x members?
Looks like a good book to add to my collection. I looked through the TOC, do you know if it goes into detail about identifying wall lines, proportional force distribution to each wall line and segment, and shearwall and diaphragm stiffness?
