NDS required hole diameter in steel plate

Does the NDS have a required (maximum) diameter for hole size in a flitch steel when fastening it to a wood member? Or does anyone have suggestion what size hole to put in the steel plate? The application is an 1/8" steel plate fastened to the side of an existing glulam purlin with 1/4"...

    1960's era 116' diameter x 90' bulk storage bin

Thanks robyengIT and SlideRuleEra on sharing the information. Both are helpful. I am looking at the bearing manufacturer's website for information. On the attached drawing's material list for the bearing, Kullager is written in. I'm checking if that could be the bearing manufacturer's name...

    1960's era 116' diameter x 90' bulk storage bin

I agree with your thoughts, but I've been told that isn't possible. The bearings have been replaced once with an oversized bearings, but now reportedly the replaced bearings are worn out and the bottom race is also ruined. As you will see on the attached bearing section drawing, everything is...

    1960's era 116' diameter x 90' bulk storage bin

I have an interesting problem to solve, and thought I ask if there are any suggestions or standards and design manuals available that may help. The problem is in a late 1960's era 116' diameter x 90' bulk storage bin. At the interior, the rotating bridge is supported by a 11'-6 diameter...

    Torsion from spring isolators

Thanks for the reply and comments. It's always helpful to get another perspective. I've done some elementary analysis, but as you pointed out it depends on how the isolator is made. I wrote the post in part because I don't recall seeing torsion being addressed in a structure with isolators...

    Torsion from spring isolators

How are engineers treating spring isolators used to support exterior mechanical equipment supported by steel framing? Specifically is there a torsional force in the steel supporting framing from either vertical or horizontal loading? In the applications I'm referring to a spring isolator is...

    Stainless steel design

Probably okay if you're needing a ballpark value or have ample excess capacity. I'm guessing for the short pieces you're need, the shapes are cold formed (bent). What grade stainless? A304 Fb is 33ksi, so nearly the same as ASTM A36. Unless you have fairly thick material, I suspect using hot...

Wood Open Web Truss lateral load connection

On SBCA's website, I found a tech note on heel blocking that shows a in-fill panel, and is likely what I'll use. KootK, that is what I suggested to the truss mfr, and they weren't keen on notching back the top chord. Mike, I've used the Simpson's HGA10 in a similar, but the RBC looks simpler...

Wood Open Web Truss lateral load connection

To use a rim joist, wouldn't it have to be the depth of the trusses which is 32"-36" on low side & 59"-63" on the high side? If it's 2 layers of 3/4" plywood, than the roof sheathing would have to be nailed to into the plywood edge. The truss manufacturer isn't real keen about notching the top...

Wood Open Web Truss lateral load connection

I have a small commercial building using bottom chord bearing open web wood joist @ 16" o.c. spanning 54' with 1/2":12" slope, and bearing on a 2x6 wood wall. Low side heel depth is 32"-36". Not sure what is the most common or economical means to transfer the horizontal diaphragm to the shear...

    ASCE 7-10 Fig's 27-6.2 & 28-6.1

Thanks for the reply. My question stems from the contradiction between MBMA manuals (1986 & 2006) and ASCE 7. MBMA give values for Load Case 2 with roof slopes less than 25 degrees, and ASCE 7 doesn't include Load Case 2 for MWFRS below 25 degrees. MBMA 2006 does acknowledge difference...

    ASCE 7-10 Fig's 27-6.2 & 28-6.1

In these figures there is a column heading "Load Case", where are Load Case 1 or 2 defined in ASCE 7?

    IRC 502.6.1 purpose

A short note to say thanks and I appreciate everyone who took time to reply. I hadn't thought of an unsymmetrical joist bearing causing torsion in the beam. A legitimate reason that can be checked. Thanks again, smb4050

    IRC 502.6.1 purpose

Does anyone know the history - reasoning - purpose behind IRC section R502.6.1 - Opposite floor joist over interior supports lapped 3"? In this case there are 2x8 floor joist spanning 8' to 9' butt together over a double LVL beam and NO wall above it. A home inspector is saying telling a...

    Flag Pole

Is this a serious post? If yes first, get a retainer before doing anything. Second, check zoning ordinances if a pole that tall can be built (I wouldn't want it near my house), and aviation restrictions. IMO, this does not sound like something a sane person does unless there are extenuating...
