Stress calculation over cross section

Hi,

I have a cylinder model where I calculated the axial stress distribution over the cylinder wall using FE analysis and now need to convert these stresses into membrane and bending stresses acting over the cross section. I did linearize the through wall stresses to obtain the membrane and bending stresses acting on the wall. My supervisor said these are not the stresses acting on the cross section, which kind of puzzles me. Could someone please help me understand this ?

He may be thinking of thin wall cylinder theory, where loading is distributed circumferentially, axial load can be given as N/mm and circumferential BM as N.mm/mm. Is that what he’s after?
 
Thanks for replying. I don’t think he meant that. Irrespective of which component of through wall stress is linearized, he said it‘s not the same as the cross section stresses resulting from internal pressure and bending moments.
 
I wonder if he is asking for you to separate the stresses by load ... what stress is due to pressure (hoop and longitudinal) ? bending, Mxx, Myy ?

Maybe go back and say "I don't understand ?"

Also "why do this ?"
 
If you could show some pictures of the cylinder [thin / thick walled (geometry), material, etc] and how it is being loaded and restrained [FBD(s), internal pressure and / or externally applied loading [point force(s) / moment(s), distributed load, circumstantially / local point restraints, etc], then the way in which the stresses will develop within the cylinder will be more understandable.
