My guess is the wood code derives the interaction equations from the generalised procedure used to generate an interaction diagram for reinforced concrete. I would try to develop an interaction diagram using wood material properties and see if you can infer where the wood axial-moment...
Agree with Hetgen that there are a lot of different factors that could influence the most efficient layout.
Would you be able to provide a link to the research?

Thanks very much. It's a work in progress but that's exactly what I was going for. Column design grouping optimisation through visualisation rather than a black box algorithm. Also a pretty picture to impress clients.
Please do follow up if want to chat. I'm at...
@OP
In my opinion, programming is great skill to pick up as a structural engineer. The best thing about learning programming is that it will teach you more about structural engineering. When you write a program to solve a structural analysis problem, you aren't solving a single geometry which...
Hi Emil,
This is so cool!
I thought about using a Voronoi diagrams to generate tributary loads. I agree with everyone that it's not a replacement for FEM, but it's a much faster check and speed is always an issue with column design as constant coordination is needed to ensure architectural...
Hi N.K - it's a late post but I thought I might be able to help others with this question.
TL:DR: when validating an axial moment interaction diagram don’t use the decompression point. It’s an imprecise term as defined by AS3600:2018. Instead compare the results to the same neutral depth axis...
Hi MDily,
Would be you able to provide an example of the design you are working with?
For the record I have seen this conflict arise before. I believe the wording does need revision. Read together, clause 11.7.4(b)(ii) and clause 10.7.1(a) imply the only compliant case would be a column-wall...
I think this is probably an increasing trend as well. The more comprehensive a software package, the more lines to verify the output, and given that software is only going to get more comprehensive, the more cumbersome and less effective line by line verification will be.
I think the only path...
