I have someone asking me if there are any codes standards regarding the mounting of lighting
switches in a Hallway, ...near doors.
Is there a minimum or maximum distance away from
doors that light switches [ i.e. - snap switches ]
are actually required to be installed ? 12",
...36, ...48"...
FWIW, ...doors could be designed to have vertical and lateral
bars engaged in to the surrounding framing, similar to blast
proof doors, or similarly, ...like the doors on ships &
submarines with "dog ears" to resist the wind forces. Also,
not pretty, but lateral reinforcement could be placed...
Rafters are identified for the roofs, because they are (typically) installed on a
diagonal plane, whereas walls use "studs" installed in the vertical plane, and ceilings use "joists" installed in the horizontal plane.

Greetings to all!
I am looking for information on some type of spill
containment system/device, that will be placed
underneath a (typical) trash dumpster, in a
restaurant setting. This system/device will
collect any liquid spills from the dumpster.
This spill containment device should be...

jimtheengineer10,
IMO, the simplest fix for your design, in your Seismic area, would be
the Simpson-Strongtie steel shear panel. The can be installed in
narrow wall sections down to 12" (max).
If you go this route, suggest you contact a Simpson-Strongtie rep. to
discuss your application...

EngMike44,
I do not know what the code writers were thinking,
but in looking at Figure R703.7.2.2, (in the 2006
IRC), this Figure indicates only two fasteners of
the 2" x 6" wood members are fastened to the
vertical (wood) studs.
The language of the code section overrules the
graphics.

jdelacruz,
In looking at Table 1607.1 in the 2006 IBC,
the maximum uniform load that can be applied
is for Stages & Platforms, ..125 psf.
May I ask why you would want more than 100
psf? Special conditions present, ..more
equipment with concentrated loads, other?
Thanks!

Thanks to all for the input! Lots of good info!
Ron,
IMO, one of the most important issues in this application,
is how to find that competent company that will accurately
diagnose the problem, or problems, ..recommend a solution
and all at a fair price.
The unknowledgable homeowner has...

Thanks bridgebuster for the reply! I do not have any more info
to provide! I am getting this info second hand!
Apparently, there is water coming up through the existing concrete
floor, and I was asked how to evaluate the actual construction of
the "slab on grade" foundation to ensure that...

I have an existing below grade, slab-on-grade foundation that
is having water issues. Water is entering the basement areas.
IMO, I believe that the exterior walls need to be evaluated
for water intrusion and points of entry for the water /
moisture coming in to the basement.
