Capacity of HSS after through bolting

Thank you KootK, makes sense and I appreciate the input!

Capacity of HSS after through bolting

Just wondering, is there a way to calculate the capacity of a HSS member after its been through bolted? I've just taken a percentage out of the capacity I've calculated from a member without the through bolts. Minor holes for lighting. Thanks!

Aluminum channel to wood ledger connection

Thank you strucbells, I agree I wouldn't want aluminum and I kept asking about why not steel, but the answer I get is the architecturals call for aluminum.

Aluminum channel to wood ledger connection

Where can I find information on calculating allowable shear values for connecting an aluminum channel to a wood ledger connection? The American Wood Council online calculator doesn't give aluminum as a dropdown option. https://www.awc.org/codes-standards/calculators-software/connectioncalc...

Titen HD screw anchor in concrete soffit (no metal deck)

kostast88, thank you for clarifying I could use Table 3, that's what I was using. This isn't a seismic application but there is some lateral load due to wind, but not that much. I know Titen HD anchors are for interior applications only and this area is somewhat enclosed off but is open to an...

Titen HD screw anchor in concrete soffit (no metal deck)

haynewp, I'm just wondering if I could still use the values provided in the ESR if it's not the exact same condition.

Titen HD screw anchor in concrete soffit (no metal deck)

ESR-2713 says the Titen HD screw anchor can be used in the soffit of concrete over metal deck. But what if there is no metal deck and it's only concrete? Is this allowed? And if it's not allowed, why not? I've contacted their Engineering Technical Support but I'm impatient to wait until the...

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

Tomfh, I would like to use through bolts but I'm a little concerned about nut pull through. And the architect would prefer a flush finish from the underside, so I would have to use a flat head through bolt, where I'm not sure if those are available. My through section is 4inches plus a 1/4inch...

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

Enable, that is a nice find, thank you for sharing. I will have to look into that!

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

STrctPono, thank you for the link to the box bolt website. I like how they have a 1/4" bolt available whereas Lindapter only has an M8 bolt as their smallest available size. On the lna box bolt link, do you know what the asterisk* means after the 1/4" size?

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

JLNJ, yes thank you! I contacted the local representative to see if they could give me design values.

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

dik, thank you for your response, no field welds. It makes sense that it's not good practice, are there any references you would recommend I could read up on for through bolting HSS? Or what about using blind bolts in an overhead application? Thanks!

    Through-Bolting to HSS Soffit Application

Hello, Where can I find design examples or guidance of how to through-bolt an HSS member from the underside to the plate above with a nut? Or blind bolts? And where can I find information for bolts less then 5/8" since it's not given in AISC? I've never designed for an overhead application. I'm...

Anchoring Exterior Metal Artwall for Residential

    Please help

Kevin9679, it sounds like you may be looking for examples relating to tributary areas. For example, if you wanted to find loads onto a column, you'd take the dead and live psf and multiply by the trib area. ASCE 7-10 Commentary on page 343 shows different trib areas for different elements such...

Anchoring Exterior Metal Artwall for Residential

r13, this will be sitting on ground, but not anchored to it because of architectural stone pavers the client doesn't want to Pentwater. I'm sorry I don't have a section of the existing condition and with minimal demolition, I'm just going off of what my boss and the client thinks it is. I like...

Anchoring Exterior Metal Artwall for Residential

I am anchoring this 40' long x 8' tall metal artwall on a wood framed residential home. The metal artwall is made of 1"×1"x1/4" tubing and perforated metal with mounting plates at odd intervals, which makes it challenging to tie in at every stud. It also cantilevers 6 inches from the wall to...
