    Volume body from solid structure

I'm not exactly sure which volume you are referring to, so I'll assume the white part on the left. One thought might be to create an new extrusion in your model that engulfs the existing white box. In creating your new solid, ensure that you do not merge it with existing solids. Then, use a...

Weight measurement on CAD using area density

The way that I typically find the mass of a design in NX is to do the following: While in the Modelling application, Go to Analysis \ Measure Bodies select the components of interest, then in the drop-down menu select volume. Once the total volume has been determined, simply calculate mass by...

    Mobile / Condensed Model

This is definitely one approach, but it doesn't quite meet the requirements as I could do the same thing with a .stp file or similar. Instead, I'd like to see if there is a way of exporting an executable that is a standalone file which does not require any support application to open it. Thanks...

    Mobile / Condensed Model

Good morning all! Another engineer in my group has a license of BobCAD/CAM that he uses at home for his personal designs. The other day, he brought in a 'mobile' version of his design to show me what he had been working on. I say 'mobile' because instead of a huge zipped file with tens or...

    Ansys Icepak Airflow Results

I appreciate the input. The model has not fully converged, though my residuals are all in the realm of 1e-4. The pressure and velocity monitor points appear to have reached steady-state as well. Initially, I did have some issues with my meshing as I accidentally left 'stair-stepping' on in the...

    Ansys Icepak Airflow Results

Any thoughts? This issue has got me stumped... I'm using 'grills' at the different air inlets with 0 resistance to monitor the airflow in, though I've tried using thin 'fluid blocks as well'. I can't understand why the the fan's operating point would differ from what the airflow in the unit is.

    Ansys Icepak Airflow Results

Good morning! Quick question for the gurus out there. I have been working on an Icepak (v.14, Ansys 2013) simulation for a chassis design. In the design, there is one fan that pulls air from inlets in a computer chassis through a number of channels and exhausts the air out the back of the unit...

    CAD Software Alternatives

@ Flash3780, Just curious if you happen to know the accuracy of some of these models. Not that it likely matters for some of the home design projects I have in mind, but it might come into play if it was used for any stringent analysis. I ask because I use both FloTHERM and Ansys Icepak at work...

    CAD Software Alternatives

That'd good to know! A few other programs that I've come across are BobCAD/CAM and Rhino. Rhino seems to be in the ~$900 range from what I recall and BobCAD/CAM is nearer the $1500 price. Although Rhino has an easily accessed demo to download, I have not played around with it or BobCAD too...

    CAD Software Alternatives

Good point drawoh... The kinds of designs I have in mind are home-use things like motorcycle parts and my own 3D printer/CNC machines. Luckily, these are not things of interest for my company as they already own my other IP ...

    CAD Software Alternatives

Swertel, I had no idea that Autodesk was doing this 123D suite. The 123D circuits looks like a good little program for me to play around with as it looks dumbed down enough for an ME to build EE stuff... To keep the topic going, I came across an article that mentioned a SolidWorks "Home Use...

    CAD Software Alternatives

I'll give the Creo Elements a try and see how it stacks up against what I'm used to - I appreciate the suggestion. Racookpe1978, some programs like Solidworks have an excellent, built-in set of tutorials and sample parts to play and gain experience with. I've found through my search for a...

    sheet metal bend angles

Kelly38, You might have to be a bit more specific as to what you are looking for. It sounds like you are trying to stacking multiple pieces of sheet metal and want to know what the minimum bend radius is for a flange. Typically, the allowable bend radius depends on two things, one - the ability...

    CAD Software Alternatives

I am very familiar with Siemens NX, Solidworks, and PTC Creo, as I use these daily at work. I have a number of projects at home though that I would like to find a comparable 2D/3D parametric CAD tool for. Can you recommend any inexpensive alternatives to these? I've dabbled a bit in SolidFace...

Mitigation of radiated EMI from SD Card slot?

Not knowing your exact application, rather than 'sealing' the SD slot against EMI emissions/susceptibilities, could you instead use a metalized SD card to 'plug' the hole created for the SD slot? My thought is that the metal encased SD card (standard form factor - provided by Samsung) should...

any NDT method to find heat exchanger tube leakage?

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any diagnostic tools that are specifically made for identifying the precise location of a leak within a fin-tube heat exchanger (particularly when there is a large array of tubes). One thought that comes to mind, aside from the mentioned pressure test, would be...
