You can take the 8 hour PE at a testing center at pretty much any point now. Not that this answers your question but it may solve your problem: just take and pass the PE!
Has anyone here had any experience with being the EOR on shipping container projects? Specifically in the US under the IBC?
I recently had a client reach out about wanting to do a commercial project. It sounds about the easiest form of a shipping container project - one 8’ x 40’ container with...
Tomfh’s situation is similar to mine. I have a client wanting to tie his old zipline that ran tree to tree to his new pavilion - tree to wood post. I appreciate the feedback.
Can someone help explain section E3 of AISC 360-10. It seems counterintuitive to me. The critical compression stress is a function of the elastic buckling stress which is a function of the unbraced length. As the unbraced length decreases, the elastic buckling increases which in turn decreases...

Plater ceiling collapsed, luckily no one hurt.
How do wind loads work on exterior ceilings under a floor above? Any chance of wind suction here?
I work for a small firm, and our fees seem to be steadily rising and we bring in a lot of work. One thing I have noticed is the senior engineer always does a great job of:
-Building relationships with his clients (architects or contractors or owners)
-Explaining what we did during design to save...
I am trying to track down a load table for a hollow core slab. Existing drawings (dated in 1984) call out: 6” core slab 57 type. Does anyone have any experience tracking down load tables for existing hollow core slabs?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks, guys, I appreciate the feedback. I’m not aware of a product that has a similar acceptance criteria. I guess it is worth “shopping” the different agencies.
I am working with a client (USA) to get approval for a product he has developed. The next step is for him to get an ICC ESR report for the product so it can be approved nation wide. Does anyone have an experience going through the process of obtaining an ICC ESR approval? Any help would be...
My recommendation is to print out the NCEES exam specification. Use the CERM to study the items specifically listed in the specification. You can waste a lot of time trying to study everything in the CERM. Other than the CERM I only had the design codes and that was all I needed.
I had a...
I believe there is Minimum Footing Width table in the IRC. I am not aware of any provisions to reduce bearing capacity. However, like you, every geotech report I have seen recommends limiting the footing width to no less than 18”/24”. While what you’re friend is designing for may be code...
I would use a Simpson SCW connector turned 90 degrees on each side of the wall top plate. They'd have to not the sheathing around the connectors. The load capacity that would typically be for out-of-plane wind would then be my allowable shear capacity for in-plane.
I've got a question about the use of a non-load bearing (vertical load) shear wall using plywood in type 2 B construction. The following are excerpts from the IBC:
Combustible materials shall be permitted in buildings of Type I or II construction in the following applications and in accordance...
I used a system on a low spring line arch about a year ago. It was only for dead load though so I’m not sure how useful it could be as a structural support.
1. Form the shape of the arch with shoring.
2. Put 2 tapcons into the back of the brick and lay them face down into the shoring/form to...
You also need to check bearing at the intersection of the different sizes of block. The 8” block only bears on the ends and web of the 12” block. You will likely want to fill the blocks above and below the intersection.
