Thank you for your feedbacks. Does the code require PT for exterior use or just for "in contact with ground". Can someone refer me to the code section that talks about PT wood?
For designing an exterior deck, does the wood need to be specified as pressure treated wood? IBC Section 2304.11.4 only talks about wood in contact with ground to be pressure treated. I would specify regular wood members for tthe entire deck taken into account the wet factor but not the...
@ focuseng:
1- Incising factor is taken into consideration as per footnote 2
2- Wet factor is also taken into consideration. Fb=0.85
3- See figure 1b which goes along with table 1 (without overhang)
4- Same as item #4
I agree with you that this table is more often used for non-engineers...
Hi,
Did anyone noticed that table 3 (Deck Beam Span) of the DCA6-09 for sizing a deck beam is on the conservative side. I am wondering if I am missing anything here, but as an example it seems that for a 9ft joist span, a 4x12 DF no.2 could span 13ft instead of their specified 8' or 9'. Also...

Not sure why I would play to be a licensed professional engineer if I am not. In case you do not wish to provide your opinion, no one is forcing you to do so on this forum.
but here are some answers to your points below:
1- Are you suggesting I go back 20 years and ask the builder...
Thank you Mike, that is a good idea, but I am not really sure how the metal detector or the rebar detector can tell that there is a concealed piece of metal behind a joist. If anything, it will probably detect the metal of the hangers on the sides.
I am the owner and the structural engineer.
I am not sure about the spacer board or the shims either, but the problem remains to make sure there is a connection between the joists and the ledger which is not clear to me, there could be a concealed type hanger (i.e. LUCZ simpson tie catalogues...
During a home inspection, we have realized that the deck (attached) may not be properly secured to the house.
The joists are attached to a piece of wood (spacer board) with a hanger before it gets attached to the ledger. The ledger is attached against the wall with cement/mortar from what I...
