To switch or not to switch?

77JQX, I do hope it goes well. Company B is listed in Fortune 100's Best Places to Work For. I'm not sure if that means anything but I shall find out. I couldn't continue to stay at Company A and worry every day about whether I would have a job tomorrow or not. Projects do not seem to be coming...

To switch or not to switch?

Just thought I would give an update. I decided to go with my gut and make the switch. Thank you all for your valuable input. I appreciate every second that you guys took to read and reply to my question.

To switch or not to switch?

I spoke with HR for company B today. They have raised the salary on their offer and it is even more tempting now. They also offer a good educational reimbursement program. I do feel like I'm learning new things at company A and still progressing as an engineer but I feel like it's only a matter...

    FE vs PE?

SNORGY, Michael Lindeburg has some excellent training material for the PE. Also, try Indira Goswami.

    FE vs PE?

Thanks everyone for the input! Are any of you familiar with the Seismic and Surveying (4 hour each) exams that are required as part of the California PE? I will hopefully be doing the CA PE in October and I wanted to complement the information I have found on the web by getting first hand...

    Longitudinal shear in built-up beams

The Q values do equal out. It makes sense now. Thanks.

    FE vs PE?

Hello all, I had a general question about how the FE and PE compare in terms of difficulty. I have heard varying opinions on this subject. Some people say that the PE is much more difficult and in depth, whereas, others say that the FE is supposed to be a harder exam. Does the answer to this...

    Longitudinal shear in built-up beams

Follow up question: Is the moment of area above the horizontal plane equal to the moment of area below the HP? In other words, is it necessary that the area above the horizontal plane muliplied by the distance from the centroid of this area to the NA is equal to the area below the HP multiplied...

    Longitudinal shear in built-up beams

Thank you JAE, that answer was spot on, concise and well explained. I appreciate your input. And yes, that is one HEAVY T section. The reason I drew that T section like that is because I wanted to make sure that the NA was located on the side of the T section.

    Longitudinal shear in built-up beams

Hello all, Hope everyone is well today. I am in the process of solving a conceptual question and I would appreciate everyone's input on this. Please see the sketch attached. This is not the exact question I'm trying to solve but it is similar enough such that the concept can be carried over...

    Surface Interference

Pinwards solution works well. Another way to do it would be to add a non-destructive boundary around the corridor and hide the existing surface. I prefer Pinwards solution because cut/fill volume analysis might not work if a hide boundary is applied to the existing surface.

Bentley’s Power GEOPAK is supposed to be a good software for roadway and infrastructure design.

Can you control the deflection of the wood that the cantilevered masonry chimney is tied into such that both the wood and the chimney meet the same deflection criteria?

Resume writing - advice needed for transitional engineers

In my opinion, all experience is relevant experience. You will somehow have to make it 'stand out' that you would prefer ME positions. Try attending job fairs where you get to talk briefly with the company representative at the fair. This way you can explain your objective in person. A lot of...

    Old vs new AutoCAD user

ACAD is probably one of the easiest softwares to learn. It is quite self-explanatory as far as basic 2D modelling goes. I was able to teach myself ACAD without too much brain damage and now I can design complex foundations with containments (3D ofcourse) with ease. With the help of CADWorx...

    Comments about age discrimination

The younger guys in the industry are discriminated against too. I hate to say this, but I am sure I can do my job more efficiently than a couple of the senior engineers. A couple of them lack motivation to the point that they purposefully waste time at work. Yet, when it comes to project...
