batch conversion of CANBUS logged data

Dear all, I have tons of CANBUS logs that I have to analyse with Matlab. I have chosen Matlab since I can automate the post-processing. Unfortunately, Matlab seems to have a few limitations in the messages it can import so, in some cases, I have to use another SW for exporting .ASC/.BLF file...

How to open .ASC CANBUS files into Matlab?

Hi Greg, thanks for your replies. The tool I am using is Vehicle Network Toolbox, which embeds the function you have linked. However, for some reasons, not all signals are found :(. Providing the same .ASC file and the same database, Vector Canalyzer finds more signals than Matlab.

How to open .ASC CANBUS files into Matlab?

Hi all, I have logged a huge quantity of CANBUS files. The files are stored in .ASC file format, which I have to analyse with MATLab. Is there any "programmatic" way that permits me to interpret (with the .DBC files) and convert the .ASC files into a file format that can be open with MATLab...

Idling or turning off the engine?

I have read that idling is detrimental for the engine life. Why?

Idling or turning off the engine?

@Deividas, That is what I was looking for! Data reported on a scientific paper. Thanks

Idling or turning off the engine?

Thanks to both of you for the answer. @3DDave I know that many vehicles have to idle. I am thinking to the sleep trucks, that idle for 6 hours per day because people sleep overnight. But, my question is vehicle independent. In a website, I have found that if the stop is longer than 10seconds...

Idling or turning off the engine?

Hi all, I am aware that idling is fuel inefficient and a waste of fuel, but I guess that it is not always convenient to turn the engine off, since the turning on requires more energy than idling. So, I think that for long periods, turning the engine off is more fuel efficient than idling, but...

How is SAE J1939 fuel consumption calculated?

Thanks Brian for your reply. That is what I was thinking about. Since, I read special terms, I thought something more detailed could be found in literature. Moreover, what does "Verified with fuel-rail-pressure and fly-wheel feedback" mean? Speaking about the big picture, I am analysing...

How is SAE J1939 fuel consumption calculated?

Hi all, I am analysing fuel consumption data got from the CAN-Bus and available into SAE J1939 database. Does anyone have any reference material about its calculation? I have not found that much. The most detailed document I have found is the following, where it is stated: "Fuel rate is based...

    Chassis dynamometer VS 4-square test

Hi all, In our lab, a little engine test-bed is available and we also run full vehicle traction test on our tracks. Our plan is to increase the type of activities we can carry out, so I am thinking to buy another test-rig. I am considering two options: - chassis dynamometer: to run traction...

How to increase the undrained shear strength?

it is a deep failure. Here a screenshot of the failure plane: https://s8.postimg.org/3olgom3c5/Capture2.png As I did not expected, the failure plane goes to the second soil layer, that is a bit stronger cu=27kPa. I tried to carry out a sensitivity analysis but only the cu significantly...

How to increase the undrained shear strength?

The average gradient is 23%, the length is 200m and the total difference in altitude is 82m, soil shear parameters are cu=40.10kPa, dry bulk density=17.40kN/m^3 and wet bulk density=19.10kN/m^3. There is water table at 20m of depth. With my simulations, I get a very small FS (around 0.3). How...

How to increase the undrained shear strength?

Hi all, I'm analyzing the stability of a slope with SSAP. My colleague provided me the soil shear strength data of the site and the slope is rather stable for the long-term analysis (i.e. using c'-phi') but not for the short-term analysis. (i.e. using cu). The reason is the slope is long and...

    Sliding resistance of gravity walls

Thanks! I heard that I should not rely on cohesion, so I should do calculate the bearing capacity without the cohesion contribution? It happened a couple of times that the critical depth (I mean the depth where cracks likely occur on the active side) is much higher than the soil layer...

    Sliding resistance of gravity walls

hi Fattdad, thanks for your reply. About the cohesion, how do you deal with tension cracks which may occur in the active side which arise from the following formula σx=ka*σz-2c*sqrt(ka)? cheers

    Sliding resistance of gravity walls

Hi all, I'm in doubt with the calculation of the sliding resistance (Ps) of gravity walls where the base is under the ground leve.. In few documents, it is stated the "Sliding of a retaining wall is resisted by the friction between the soil and the base" (From Peck and Terzaghi)...

Design of durability tests for transmissions

@Gear: I'll check out, I'm searching the standard. In our case the test will be carried out on a full vehicle chassis (engine+transmission+axles), so I hope there is not the effect you mentioned @romke: What we want to accomplish is exactly what you said. I still have not a clear idea on how...

Design of durability tests for transmissions

@Gearcutter: Thanks, I didn't know agma standard, in EU ISO 6336 is much more popular. I'll check out that standard.

Design of durability tests for transmissions

@Greg: It's clear that is misapplied but Miner's method is widely adopted by engineers and it is also included in the ISO 6336-6. BTW, the problem is getting as complex as I supposed in the beginning where I should consider a series of maneuver/driving events. I spotted few that are recurrent...

Design of durability tests for transmissions

@romke: The approach we are using is right the one you depicted and with the same results you wrote (i.e. short test for the rearward gear). My customer made many measurements just for understanding how his vehicles are used. You spoke about driving patterns, what are for you? Just speed and...
