I am checking a Compress calculation report and the designer modeled a 50 ft seam/seam tower with just a single shell course instead of multiple shell course, e.g. 5 shell cans that are 10 ft long.
Will the period of vibration be the same?
JStephen,
Bednar also mentioned about the Zorrila methodology, i.e. performing dynamic analysis when W/Ld^2 is less than 20. And so does other authors like Dennis Moss and Kanti Mahajan. Moss even mentioned that just using L/D > 15 as the criteria for performing dynamic analysis is...
DSB123,
The ladders or platforms does not go all around. All L&P's and pipes are located within a 180 degree orientation. The rest of the vessel orientation has no attachments. The reason I am wary about not considering vortex shedding is that the trays (120 total) will be installed after...
I am designing a 300 ft tall x 26 ft diameter tower. The tower would need a thick skirt and thicker bottom shell sections due to vortex shedding...around 1 5/8" thick. Without considering vortex shedding, the skirt and bottom sections would just require 1 1/4" thk sections.
Alhtough the Client...
One of the lift options in the Pressure Vessel Design Manual 3rd edition by Dennis Moss is the Shell Flange Lug shown on pages 391 and 397. Has anybody used a shell flange lug in lifting a vertical vessel? How is it possible to lift a vessel in the vertical position?
SnTMan,
You mentioned "The client has written a specification containing specific language about how he wants something done. Your company has apparently accepted this specification as a matter of contract. If so, you are obligated to comply."
I did not say that the fillet weld requirements for...
Correction: 9600 lb/in is for E60XX.
SnTMan,
What do you mean by "the client is client"? Do you mean to say that you will just accept everything the client says without even challenging them? Do you mean that right or wrong, I should blindly follow what the client says? I guess you're on the...
gr2vessel,
I understand ASME requirements except for sizing of fillet welds. UG-55, UG-4(b), UG-22, UW-5(a) all support what you are saying. I am still not convinced about sizing of fillet welds or which weld allowable stress to use.
For example, a lifting lug is welded on the vessel. Material...
According to client, sizing of fillet welds for nonpressure parts, like platform clips or pipe support clips, shall be based on UW-18(d). Is this correct?
"Unless the sizing basis is given elsewhere in this
Division, the allowable load on fillet welds shall equal the
product of the weld area...
fegenbush,
Thanks for quick reply.
Stiffening rings are 6" x 6" x 5/8" angles. We specified SA-516-70N for material. The vessel fabricator requested to substitute with SA-36 angle bars.
Material substitution is acceptable to me, but I would like the fabricator to impact test the SA-36 angle...
According to UCS-66, attachments that are essential to the structural integrity of vessel shall be evaluated for impact testing. Are vacuum stiffening rings considered to be one of these attachments?
Are stiffening rings required to be evaluated for impact testing per UCS-66?

Hello all.
Our customer's spec states that Vessel MAWP shall be the Design Pressure. Customer wants their vessel U-stamped and registered for MAWP = design pressure.
Customer spec also states that MAWP shall be limited by the lesser of shell, head or flange rating and in no case shall the MAWP...
