To Experienced Structural Engineers,
I am working at a small structural engineering firm as a project engineer, and deal with the design of residential & commercial mostly wood frame buildings in California. I have been working at this firm for a year now. I get 30$/hr. Most of the projects I...
Hi Folks,
My question is about the lateral distribution of seismic force for a 2-story wood framed residential building.
Info about the building : The front portion of the ground floor has a roof at a level which is almost 2 feet higher than the second flor of the house. I am planning on...
Structural analysis is done after modeling your structure so first model your structure, and then if it is easy to analyze it by hand use the most efficient method to analyze it or else you can use softwares or excel sheets to do it for you.
Hi Folks,
I am designing a steel pergola which is completely an architectural element and it consists of 4 vertical and 4 lateral members -connecting vertical members to each other.I calculated the seismic force acting on the steel pergola based on ASCE 13.3 Seismic Demands on Non-Structural...
Hi Folks,
I am trying to calculate the rebars for a deep rectangular footing. I think I am confusing myself .. I would like to get your guys' opinions on this simple issue. How would you guys calculate the bending for rebars (transverse) - for this type of footing ?
I was planning to have a...
@HotRod10 Thanks! Yes, I thought you meant cross braces between columns. I have never done that before but it sounds logical. I need to think about it and try to find if there are any references about it.
Hi Folks,
I am working on a residential project where I need to design the wood deck also. The deck will be connected to the existing house ( not cantilevered )from one side and the other side will be supported by columns for both lateral and gravity. I will design the columns as flag poles-...
Thank you all for valuable answers. I will sister 2x12s with 2x6 to cantilever it out.
It looks like that will be the best option for the ease of construction.
Thank you all for your responses. Regarding the option that Eric suggested, it is not really more feasible than notching because if I use cantilevered 2x6s, I will end up using 2x6 s under the cantilevered 2x6 beams to attach the ceiling.
Regarding over-stressing the notched section, I can not...
Hi Folks,
I was just wondering if any of you guys analyzed a notched wood beam by considering the notched section as a cantilevered beam. I have 2x12s at the roof framing and because of architectural reasons, I am cantilevering the notched 3 feet portion of 2x12s. It is basically a 2x12...
