modifying ASTM A536 ductile iron standard material Grades

GGG70 is the old DIN1693 call out for pearlitic ductile iron. Its worth noting the properties are minimum properties per 'Y' blocks. EN 1563 modified those properties a bit depending on section thickness, and depending on your part that maybe a factor. 375# is not a very big casting. Are you...

308L weld fracture with heat tint

The water in the system is very clean and is carefully monitored with a nitrogen blanket. Both Cl and SO4 was found to be under 0.5ppb with low O2 under 100ppb. this weld broken in the same place a previous weld did and we know its a very stressed joint, but I have not seen a Stainless weld...

308L weld fracture with heat tint

Weld is joining 304 to make a box connection for the cooling water. This area is under stress and vibration, but I don't see any macro fatigue striations. The whole fracture has this appearance.

308L weld fracture with heat tint

The weld was specified as a fillet weld, but its the fracture face that seems unusual and how would colored oxidation IN a stainless weld in a closed water system occur. the failures of stainless welds usually have a fatigue or ductile overload look (when they do happen through weld bead) not...

308L weld fracture with heat tint

Has anyone seen a stainless 308 weld fracture with a heat tint inside the weld? Weld is joining 304. This weld was pulled open after a PT inspection revealed a leak from a tight crack. The weld was part of a cooling water piping system. The fracture itself (confined to the weld bead) and the...

Any method for determining material? (round bar)

This is why I travel around with an XRF or OES;hardness tester, and minipolisher. LOL All comes down to cost of testing vs. cost/use of alloy (I don't see mentioned length or diameter). Depends what your final use is and or customer needs in terms of certification.I would not take shavings...

    Metallurgy and Materials PE Exam

The CA board (bpelsg) referenced some data in the Winter bulletin#41 : For the previous 3 years in CA, a total of 10 Met PE have been achieved. So the current trend for California applicants is 4+-1 stamps are awarded each year- with about 200 'active' CA Met PE's currently. Small number given...

    Metallurgy and Materials PE Exam

Here is the link for the PE results for those interested: http://ncees.org/exams/pe-exam/ Technically I didn't 'need' to take the exam, as I don't do external consulting …yet :) I do interface with several PE's (civil/mech/EE/Cr) and with a coworker who IS a met PE. So there was a bit of...

    Metallurgy and Materials PE Exam

for the record- OCT14 Results posted: 50 people sat and 20 passed. 34 first timers w/16 pass & 16 repeaters w/4 passing. 4 passed in CA (including me :> ) so I guess 2-3 months is enough time to prep, but 6 months would be a less stressful and more complete study program. As usual it has...

    Metallurgy and Materials PE Exam

Has anyone who took the 2013 exam have any additional tips? I'm prepping for the oct2014 in CA and I agree some of the TMS questions are not the most applicable for the manufacture practicing metallurgist. I know last year TMS did a survey of MT PE so I am wondering if the questions may shift a...
