@winelandv - that is what i was thinking too! I guess some context is useful. The weld symbol is observed at the end of a joist brace member: https://imgur.com/Y9pSGrA
It is not a cross-section. it is located on a weld symbol's tail "TYP E.E." I usually see the weld process here: RSW, GTAW, etc. Just never seen "E.E."
We came across a weld tail symbol "TYP E.E." in a drawing on site. I looked up the symbol and it seems to be a frequently used welding abbreviation, but I was wondering if anyone here know what the abbreviation means? We understand the TYP means Typical, but never came across the "E.E."...
Hi Jed,
Thanks for the response. I have not incorporated that load yet. I'm still struggling on how to input the crane loads into SAP 2000. I have been reading AISC's Design Guide #7 but I'm still confused. I have input the crane runway on the model, as you can see on the model. Do you...
The file attached is the snapshot of the model overview
If you see on the second picture, the bottom section of the column is blue, but the top is yellow. This indicates that the column stress is higher on the top section. I have never encountered something like this before. Upon looking...
Hi everyone,
I am trying to model a warehouse with an Overhead Crane spanning about 14m (40ft). I have only inputted the dead and live loads of the warehouse, excluding any lateral (seismic/wind) loads but the model isn't working out. There's a problem with the top section of the column above...
I have a question regarding the application of ASCE 12.8.7. Equation (12.8-16) in ASCE 7-10 is as follows:
Theta = (Px) * Delta
----------------
Vx * hsx * Cd
Px = Total Vertical Design Load at and above level x
Delta = Story drift...
I'm a structural engineer by training working on the client's side - We are designing a 40 story structure with 32m x 25m footprint. The building's lateral load system will be a center core with perimeter columns. Our structural engineering consultant is saying:
"the structural opening is...
I agree, the ideal case would be to have it written in the contract. That's water under the bridge though - the contract was already drafted & signed before I got into the company. In the previous company that I worked for, the consultant actually declined our requests for the model...
I used to work for an oil and gas EPC as a Structural Engineer. The normal practice is I would model something in Staad and analyze it. When the results are out, I would compile all of the results along with my analysis and any commentaries in a pdf file and compile it into a zip file as...
I'm reviewing another building and this time it's around an elevator shaft:
150mm thick wall
10mm x2 transverse reinforcement
13mm x2 longitudinal reinforcement
20mm x2 cover
10mm+13mm+20mm )x2 = 96mm
We have 150 - 96 = 54mm to play with, which isn't much.
We're trying to get the structural...
Let me start with a story - My client has recently bought a hotel building. The building was bought along with an empty plot of land behind it. The previous owner intended to expand the hotel on the plot of land and has already paid for the architectural & structural design to commence. The...
It's been a while, but I just thought I'll give an update since I've asked. After some more discussion with the owner, the owner agreed to let us demolish the road and we ended up with a simple RCC wall. The only slight problem was that the height was 8m. After some reading and calculation, I...
I've never really thought about concrete strength and have always used the standard 4000 psi concrete. Recently, I have been reading up on some of the factors to take into consideration when specifying a concrete strength, such as the inherent safety in designing for a lower concrete strength -...
Here is a sketch of the owner's request (this is based on a previous design that is currently being constructed) :
http://imgur.com/xLx8tpF
I don't think it's a very effective design considering the cost of bored pile and the number of piles per linear meter. The concrete sheet pile I was...
I wasn't a typo. It's a concrete sheet pile, maybe similar to this - http://xmt.vn/web/en/precast-prestressed-concrete-sheet-pile-384/ It would've been pretty effective, but the owner deemed it too expensive.
Here's another image looking along the wall: http://imgur.com/GOTpyCh
Another looking...
My boss (who isn't an engineer) and I have been discussing. We've looked into using concrete sheet piling and it was too expensive. We've also looked into soldier walls and it was still relatively expensive. A senior engineer and I have been talking and we've agreed that there's just no way that...
I don't think my post was very clear. We're supposed to demolish the wall and re-construct everything underneath the wall (drains etc.). The wall isn't structural. The only thing that we're trying to save is the road. Another engineer proposed a counterfort RCC wall, but there's just no way to...
I have a project "retrofitting" a "retaining wall" and I'm having trouble selecting the type of retaining wall. You'll see why I put those two words in quotation marks below:
A brick wall was erected between our property and the neighbor's property. There's initially no need of a "retaining...
