Are there industrial gear-shifting gearboxes that can handle 5000 horsepower?
If so which ones? Can you please name a few and post some links if possible?
I asked because there are rumors of a 5000 hp supercar: The Devel Sixteen.
While most people think they are lying/pipedreaming about the...
I know they are nowhere near as hot or cold galvanizing, but
Are Zinc rich spray paints really better than regular paint in preventing corrosion?
Does it adhere firmly to bare metal (mild steel)?
What about using regular paint on top of Zinc rich paint?
Would it peel off?
Any other advice on...
Would riveted Titanium panels make chrome plated steel any more prone to corrode?
Which is better to use steel, stainless steel or Titanium rivets to avoid the chrome plated steel frame corroding?
I tried Googling it and found almost no info.
So far only found student exercises to use thermal expansion coefficients and formulas.
Does cooling a rivet before installing actually helps ensure a tight fit thus preventing it from coming loose?
Or does it actually adds stress when it expands?
Titanium sheets are going to be riveted to a rectangular steel tube frame.
Can Titanium sheets also be bonded, glued, brazed, soldered or welded to steel to add SOME additional strength to the strength from the rivets?
i.e. Titanium is said not to be weldable to steel.
Can it be done to create...
I've read somewhere that the semicircular (fishmouthed) welds in round tubes are much stronger than those straight line ones found in square tubes.
Is that true?
If so, Why? Aren't square tubes supposed to have more weld length? Does the curved weld shape helps?
Is there a big difference in...
If a mechanical device (consuming energy) is used to blow or suck air to reduce the vehicle aerodynamic drag
Can this energy consumed by the mechanical device be overcompensated by a lesser amount of energy required to move the car at the same speed?
Thus net energy savings
Is there a...
Any drawbacks or challenges from using 304 stainless steel tubes for a car spaceframe?
Some say stainless steel is brittle and will fatigue soon, while others say its not a big deal as Chrome-Moly is also somewhat brittle yet is has been used many times, even in aircraft.
Are SS 304 welds...
Bifacial solar cells can produce electricity from light coming from both sides.
Reportedly they produce up to 20% more electricity with diffuse sunlight coming from the back.
However their price is much more than 20% higher.
What about just using a separate solar cell on each side?
What cell...
Is there a distinct (and high) fatigue limit for stainless steel?
In other words Is there a fatigue limit force below which even millions of cycles wouldn't cause failure. Pretty much like Steel compared to Aluminum
Is there a big difference between Austenitic, Ferritic alloys?
If you could use the A-pillars (and/or the A-pillar tubes in a rollcage) to route hot radiator and engine area air to the roof
Where would you place the hot air exit?
Fore/aft: In the windshield header, roof midsection or backlight header
Side to side: roof edges or roof center.
What would be...
I'm confused on how to read solar cell efficiency vs wavelength charts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_efficiency
This chart suggests that external quantum efficiency is over 80% for wavelengths from about 500 to 1000 nm.
However this doesn't relate to real world efficiency because of...
It depends on what the rules allow.
If you can, place the wing even higher, add some almost ground rubbing side skirts, a rear diffuser with flat underbody panels elsewhere.
Use taller wind end plates, BTW remove the wing mounts you have and make the end plates the attachment points.
Make some...
Using the air flow already created by the fans to divide the airflow in two sections a straight inner section and a (curved) Venturi outer section that sucks out the boundary layer thru holes in the test section area.
Something like this
Would this array need extra flow straighteners?
Does...
Some tunnels use a moving ground or floor boundary layer suction.
Would boundary layer suction also be useful for the tunnel walls and ceiling?
How to calculate the size of the wall holes and pump size/flow required for this suction?
Weren't cars or models supposed to occupy only a small fraction of the wind tunnel cross sectional area?
Yet in the A2 wind tunnel
http://www.a2wt.com/
cars use about 1/3 of the tunnel width and height
How do they avoid interference from the tunnel walls?
I read somewhere that they adjust the...
There are inline sensors used to measure the ethanol content in the fuel rail. I have heard their use is diminishing because they are expensive and unreliable. The auto makers seem to be able to get away with just using the lamda sensors which they have to have anyway.
Thanks for your replies...
Are there some sensors submerged that can measure the approximate ethanol to gasoline ratio in the fuel tank?
So far I've only heard of exhaust sensors.
Is there a more direct way to measure this ratio?
Maybe some sensors still in R&D stage?
