    Ladder Framing for Roof Outriggers

There are so many colored lines on your drawing that I don't really know what's going on. But I borrowed your drawing and added an angled blue line. I could cantilever over the corner of the building and pick load from the fascia boards. You'd have some connections to figure out, and you'd...

    Ladder Framing for Roof Outriggers

Run outriggers at the corners at roughly a 45° angle.

    Another Girder Truss Setback Question

The dimension of 1' 11 1/4" to the "A" jack is from the outside of framing to the face of the jack. Then 2' OC from there. It's actually 24' 0" across the end. Where the dimensions meet in the center, that jack is 1.5" wide. If you look closely at the dimensions you'll see it. I rarely...

    Another Girder Truss Setback Question

As luck would have it, I did a layout for a 24' hip yesterday. Thought I'd post it just for the heck of it. All dimensions are to the face of the truss.

    Another Girder Truss Setback Question

I can only tell you what I do and what my thoughts are. There are so many different points of view and ways of building hip ends that I don't believe there is any one right answer. We typically sell trusses to framers. And framers want the trusses all at 2' O.C. so the plywood goes down more...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

Not sure what you mean by "these regions". Attic trusses are obviously not fully triangulated. There are high bending moments at the TC joints - Especially on low sloped attic trusses. The program we use has been developed over the past ~30 years, and is used nationwide. They wouldn't...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

I didn't get that from your post. I'll see if I can do it today.

    Wood truss moving bearing

That's odd. We will always try to help an existing customer. If we built a truss and someone is modifying it, we'll help them - Even if they're not a customer. Alpine will do a repair for a truss we built, even if it's several years later. I don't know Mitek's policy.

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

XR250 - I'm going to attempt to post a design based on what you asked. Since the forum software is different, I don't know how it will go. In your post you said something about a 2X6 BC working. Surely you didn't mean that? It's not even close to being possible. I made the room 15'...

    Wood truss moving bearing

If a situation like that were brought to me, I'd refer it to Aline. The engineers there would design the repair and return it to us. They do repairs every day, so they know exactly what to do. If you're planning to do the repair design on your own, I don't have any info that would be of any...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

What exactly is "typical" to you? We do a lot of variations of attic trusses.

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

I was thinking today that camber got mentioned a couple of times. The first truss plant I worked at in the 1980s cambered trusses. Every truss plant since then has not. I don't know what percentage of plants use camber. Just wanted to mention that it's not universally done.

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

Eng16080 said: "Most truss designers aren't interested in doing consulting work without there being a guaranteed job." I'm sorry you've had that experience. Every place I've worked at, we've been glad to help out. I figure if we can work out details ahead of time, it benefits everyone. And...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

XR2500, you have a point. It might be possible to use a smaller BC size with a center bearing. It depends on the situation. If these attic trusses go up against a 2nd floor that's framed with 2X12s and the floor heights need to match, that might determine the size of the BC. In general, I...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

XR250 said that adding a center wall will make the trusses cheaper. It might require smaller plates at some of the joints. But plates are a small percentage of a truss cost. On small attic like this one I'd say it would make virtually no difference. StrEng007 said ..."coordinate with the...

Raised heel attic truss alignment with wood studs

A few thoughts and opinions from the perspective of a truss designer: I've often wondered why more people don't put studs 2' OC under trusses in general. Less lumber used, and more space within the walls for insulation. Setting the trusses 16" OC will increase the cost of the trusses by...

Design for roof slopes greater than 12/12

A couple of practical thoughts - LVLs can be used as rafters. They don't face the same limitations as I-joists, and long lengths are no a problem. A 7"x18" parallam PSL as the ridge beam was mentioned. Make sure what you're specifying is readily available. Large beams like that can be...

    Wood Floor/Roof Joist cross-bridging

I never thought it for load sharing - More to prevent vibration.

    28/12 Roof A Frame Questions

All the documentation I've seen for several brands of I-joists have all required a ridge beam. I doubt the manufacturers would go for bolting floor joists to I-joist rafters. But I have never been presented with a situation like this one before, so I haven't asked.
