Anchor bolts at Cold Formed Steel Shear Walls

Thanks for the responses. Not sure if plan checkers around here will allow the shot pins. I emailed CFSEI the same question and got the response below: There is no recommendation to use washers. The use of washers would depend upon the need for additional bearing capacity. Section E3.3.1 of...

Anchor bolts at Cold Formed Steel Shear Walls

Our firm has a lot of experience with residential wood construction but we are being asked more and more to design with cold formed steel studs and wood sheathing to make up the lateral force resisting system. My questions are about the anchor bolts: 1. Is there a quick reference for designing...

    CMU Lintel Damage

Ok went and looked at the damaged lintel yesterday. I poked up through the cracks and there is grout. In a couple of locations there is a +- 3/4” void in the areas of the largest cracks. The roll up door is supported by the jambs so that is probably not a contributing factor. The rest of the...

    CMU Lintel Damage

This was a designed lintel and I have checked the design and it is satisfactory. This is a 14'-0" span. The entire wall and lintel was solid grouted. I am going to the site this afternoon and will report my findings tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your input.

    CMU Lintel Damage

MG: Thank you. Makes me worry about the rest of the structure. Not sure how high their lifts were, the grout mix design etc. A lot to unpack here.

    CMU Lintel Damage

GC Hopi: That was my original thought. WARose: Good advice.

    CMU Lintel Damage

I meant to say a couple of months ago. I have a site visit later on in the week and will update the post if necessary. Thanks again.

    CMU Lintel Damage

Thanks for the responses. No temperature issues here. This was just installed a couple of weeks ago in Southern California.

    CMU Lintel Damage

I received an email with the attached photo from an architect concerning a CMU lintel that has cracked on the underside of the block (see attached photo). This is a solid grouted wall supporting a wood roof, should not have been a problem. I must admit I have never seen a crack like this. The...

Raised floor to slab on grade

Thanks XR, I'll look into it.

Raised floor to slab on grade

Thanks CEL. The elastomeric combined with traditional flashing is what the architect is recommending.

Raised floor to slab on grade

I have a client who has an existing wood raised floor foundation. The joists bear on top of the concrete stem wall. They want to do a portion of their addition as slab on grade. This means the concrete slab on grade will butt up right against the existing wood sill plate, joists, and floor...

    Unconsolidated High Lift CMU

Thanks for the response regarding the prism tests. I will look into them. Our plans call for a solid grouted wall. It seems some areas did not get grouted. These areas are located seemingly at random. I assumed they occurred because of the high lifts and lack of consolidation. The...

    Unconsolidated High Lift CMU

Hello all Our firm designed a 3 story structure with fully grouted CMU bearing/shear walls. The mason did his grouting in high lifts 8-12 feet with 100% cleanouts according to the inspection reports. No issues were reported in the inspection reports. After several mistakes the mason was fired...

Using a Wood Beam to Raise Plate Height

Thanks KootK. I was just curious after seeing it come across our plan check desk a couple times.

Using a Wood Beam to Raise Plate Height

Yeah in retrofit applications. The sheathing being discontinuous definitely makes a lot of sense. thanks.

Using a Wood Beam to Raise Plate Height

I have seen other engineers use a 3.5x11.875 PSL or something similar on top of an existing top plate all around a home to raise the ceiling height. This feels to me like it is inducing a hinge, but I can't quite rationalize that. It seems you could almost consider it a triple top plate where...

Cutting door in existing tilt up panel at panel edge

Thank you all for your responses. I have suggested to the client to look for another area to create the door. There are two other walls that would be much easier structurally speaking. We shall see how it goes.

Cutting door in existing tilt up panel at panel edge

Thanks for the replies. I was worried about water in the joint as well. We don't have ice and snow here so that is not a concern. I have attached a sketch of the two would be affected panels. The door is metal. The opening would not be centered on the joint because of a partition wall the client...
