dik,
Intended purpose is a cafeteria with a kitchen. The slab is the main floor slab. There is a 12" void below the concrete grade beams (shrink/swell soils). The entire slab and grade beam system will be formed no void boxes - customer requirement.
hokie66,
How would I quantify additional...
ron9876 & dik,
The slab is a one-way reinforced slab with spans ranging from 16ft to 18ft in the longitudinal direction. The slab is doweled into supporting grade beams bearing on drilled piers at the spacing noted above. The are no supporting members in the transverse direction except at the...
I agree - I have applied the appropriate ACI equations for temperature steel. However, I am getting pressure from others on the project to cut the slab based on their past experiences.
I am designing a 9 inch thick, elevated, one-way reinforced (continuous top and bottom), structural concrete slab. The slab and associated support members (grade beams) will be formed and poured seperately. The slab has a cover of 1-1/2" typical top and bottom. The longitudinal reinforcing is...
It is a large pier and grade beam foundation. The slab and beams are poured seperately and doweled together. The one-way slab spans continuously over 24" square reinforced concrete beams which in turn bear on 24" diameter reinforced concrete piers. Typical spans are approximatley 17 feet...
I am designing an elevated, one-way reinforced concrete slab. The slab thickness is 9 inches. The primary reinforcment is #9 @ 11" oc top and bottom with cover of 1.5" top and bottom. The temperature steel is #5 @ 16" oc. The slab is for a 20,000 sf building. I am determining where to place...
Where do I find the ACI code requirements for the spacing of stirrups across the section of a wide beam. I am detailing a 36" deep x 24" wide concrete grade beam and would like to know how many longitudinal bars to include in each closed stirrup.
For the example above, the party with the other opinion was initially telling me, that the beam with the 36 inch depth is considered deep if it has a clearspan OVER 144 inches - which contradicts ACI. They have since informed me they were mistaken. Thank you for your replies.
Can anyone clearly explain what ACI 318 section 10.7 means by a deep beam with regard to section depth and span length? I am getting differing opinions. The code section states:
"Deep beams are members loaded on one face and supported on the opposite face so that compression struts can...
I am looking into designing some beam to column moment connections. The intent is to use HSS sections for the members (beams and columns) of the frames of the lateral force resisting system for the structure. I am not finding much information for this type of connection in the AISC manual or...
SWComposites,
I am not providing the expertise on the lifting of the existing structure. I was asked to provide assistance with the crawlspace design. My earlier entry talking about the steel beams came from the client who told me the contractor doing that part of the job was going to pass...
BARetired, thanks for pointing out my poor choice of words in my inital problem statement - maybe my understanding of the rafter thrust concept is flawed. My thought was an attempt to increase the resistance to the bending the rafters experience between the collar tie and their lower bearing...
Thanks for all the great responses. The ROG floor joists will span from side to side and are 2x12 @ 16"o.c. The joists will bear on a dropped steel beam spanning 21' front to back. This will cut the joist span to 11'.
I am working on a house located in the coastal area Virginia. Typical loads include: 110 mph wind, 20 psf roof live/snow. The attached sketches show the framing of the garage which includes 2x10 rafters, 2x8 ceiling joists adn 2x4 stud walls all at 16" o.c.
The room over the garage vaulted...
Thanks for all the input. The project is located in a coastal area of Virginia where frost action is not an issue. I have since discovered the original blueprints for the house. They call out a 4" thick slab with 6" wire mesh. The code officials in the area enforce a 1500 psf allowable soil...
Thanks msquared48. I thought cutting the slab sould be the better way to do this. Could you direct me to a reference manual to use when designing slabs on grade?
Stillerz: I spoke with the client today and he told me steel beams would run along the 30' length spaced about 10' or so. These...
