Density-Strength Relationship for Various Soils w.r.t. Compaction Standard

Thanks fattdad, I'll start by saying that I've always appreciated your value to this eng-tips geotechnical community, so thanks for that. With respect to my original question regarding the compaction specification, what I interpret from your post is that the compaction specification is perhaps...

Density-Strength Relationship for Various Soils w.r.t. Compaction Standard

Thanks for the information guys, this provides insight into the sensitivity of effective friction angle w.r.t. initial relative density (~11-17 degrees). Unfortunately in the Appalachian plateau we rarely deal with the cohesionless soils referenced in the figures. I would expect that the...

Density-Strength Relationship for Various Soils w.r.t. Compaction Standard

I'm looking for some data pertaining to the influence of the compaction standard on peak shear strength for a given soil. The situation is the construction of embankments/pads and choosing a compaction standard for the project specifications. The main objective is adequate shear strength...

Elastic Settlement as a Separate Quantity in Settlement Analysis

Correct me if I am wrong f-d, but I think that the important thing here is that constrained modulus used in such a way as you suggest would give you the total settlement. It would not be additive with some separate analysis considering consolidation.

Elastic Settlement as a Separate Quantity in Settlement Analysis

Thinking about this more and more, my personal conclusions is that students, when they learn settlement evaluation, don't learn, or aren't taught, to parse the difference between elastic settlement and the theory of elasticity. My conclusion, although not explicitly stated in my soil mechanics...

Elastic Settlement as a Separate Quantity in Settlement Analysis

Ron, I see where you are coming from. I think it might take the discussion in a somewhat different direction but I have the following thoughts. Regardless of whether the deformation from a load results in a change in void ratio or an elastic deformation, the volume change measured in the...

Elastic Settlement as a Separate Quantity in Settlement Analysis

I have often wondered why there is a convention to include elastic settlement as a separate value in addition to consolidation (primary & secondary) settlement. It seems to me that when you run an oedometer test you have an initial stress and void ratio and a final stress and void ratio. This...

    Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k)

Moe333, thanks again! I see what you mean about this text. I really appreciate the author's paragraph at the bottom of page 364. Even in school I've always understood geotechnical engineering to be one of the more experience based sub-disciplines within civil engineering. Practice has confirmed...

    Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k)

Thanks moe333, I will likely order the book. Forgive me if it is described in this reference but how would you structure a recommendation in this instance? Would you give one value representative of the center condition? An average value?

    Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k)

Thanks fattdad, I think that between you, oldestguy, and mulling over the concept for a few days I have more sharply defined the issue in my head. Although not strictly a soil parameter, k can be correlated to soil parameters for slab on grade or concrete pavement design. I do think care needs...

    Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k)

Oldestguy, thanks for the response. The specific use of the word scary comes from my knowledge regarding the paper found at the website below (see page 7). Skimming this paper again, it may have seeded some of my recent thoughts on the topic and I had just forgot. I suppose this is the sole...

    Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (k)

As a geotechnical engineer, I've always been dissatisfied with the way the topic of modulus of subgrade reaction is addressed in geotechnical textbooks and figured I would look to this forum to help clarify some concepts in my mind and hopefully the minds of others. Firstly, after reading many...

IBC Chapter 16 - Determination of Average N value for Seismic Site Class Determination

As an update, this discussion with a colleague jogged his memory regarding the difference between the equivalent hydraulic conductivity for horizontal flow through a stratified medium vs equivalent hydraulic conductivity for vertical flow through a stratified medium. Applying this analogy to...

IBC Chapter 16 - Determination of Average N value for Seismic Site Class Determination

I find table 1613.5.2, Equation 16-42 in the 2009 IBC, and the accompanying discussion unsatisfactory. I was hoping someone on eng-tips might be able to provide some additional perspective. Table 1613.5.2 references the "average" standard penetration resistance in the top 100 feet of the soil...
