    Pneumatic Conveying

Again, thanks Quark. The thread created as a result of your suggestion the the bulk-online forum proved invaluable. For those of you interested. http://www.bulk-online.com/Forum/showthread.php?threadid=4562&goto=newpost

    Pneumatic Conveying

Thanks Quark. Apologies for getting knotted up in my own thread but... I followed up with similar post on forum you recommended. Already got back a reply - "Stick to truly vertical and horizontal lines of you can...inclines between 20 and 80 degrees to horizontal will require more air to avoid...

    Pneumatic Conveying

A little more thought/question this topic. Which is BEST - a vertical lift or a long steep slope say 30 to 70 deg that accomplishes the same effective vertical lift?

    Pneumatic Conveying

Thanks for your response. I'm pretty certain I don't want to make slope down from 1st to base of 2nd lift as this would tend to aggravate problem you mentioned. But I could make 1st lift only about 5 ft. & run slope up to 2nd lift at about 1 ft in 30, as opposed to a 6 ft 1st lift and a 30 ft...

    Pneumatic Conveying

Am currently designing a dilute phase pneumatic transfer system to convey a dense powder. Have a 6 foot lift and a 2 foot lift with about 30 feet horizontal between 2 lifts. Question - should "horizontal" pipe (between 2 lifts) be horizontal, sloped up or down from 1st to 2nd lift. Can find...

    P&IDs, PFDs and what else?

EFD - Engineering Flow Diagram, some refer to as a Mechanical Flow Diagram, or a Piping Flow Diagram, or there are prob. other names that other firms use. All diagrams are more or less schematics provided to illustrate that portion of the system intended viewer or the producer deems important...

    Surface temperature measurement

Thanks 6748. I don't have time to respond fully to your post and others because I'm off trying to prove to folks than this latest crisis can be overcome. Part of my frustration is that we have a bunch of instrument engineers that have their head up an their own orifice. We have complext...

    Surface temperature measurement

Some of the questions I can answer now, some I'll have to collect more info. This is not just one case, but the constant thread is that when we are trying to measure surface temperatures that are very low (-20C and lower) or very high (500 C and higher) as compaired to ambient, we see 10 to 20%...

    P&IDs, PFDs and what else?

I have been an active design engineer for over 30 years and much of that time has been as an A/E serving chemical and paper plants in the US. If there is anything that is standard, it's that there is no standard. Some of the companies I have been exposed to as an A/E had corporate standards...

    Surface temperature measurement

Our plant has had several problems recently related to accurately measuring high temperature (~500C) surfaces using spring loaded flat tip stainless sheathed thermocouples. In several cases the reported surface temperature is up to 100C below what we think the actual temperature is. How? When...

    Nitric acid treatment

You say that your waste generation rate is too small to use biodenitrification, but I think your rate is not that small. We have used biodenitrification in on a waste stream that varies from 2 to 4 times that volume with no adverse affects. You just have to keep the microbes comfortable. The...

    Lining for Sodium Hypochlorite Tank

We have a need to replace and existing lined carbon steel tank that has been used for this service for about 8 years. We are in a bit of a stalemate as one group wants to use ASEM RTP1 PVC lined FRP and the other group wants to use ASME rubber lined. Note, this is a vented tank so pressure...

    Perislistic pump

So you are saying about 10 gpm. The answer is yes, but why? This type of pump is cheap, and high maintenance. About the only thing they have going for them is that they will dry run and they don't mix the fluid being pumped if you need to avoid mixing.

    Tube & hose failures

Thanks to both RBCoulter &Saxon for your input. Saxon - You indicate max wp of hose was 200 psi. Any idea what pressure the hose was actually exposed to at failure? graybeard

    Freon leak detection

It has been a few years since I used any, but I assume it is still available. You could purchase Freons with dye tracers added. You could also purchase the concentrated dye and add it to the Freon. Then you just look for the red spots on the system. The down side is if the leak is into the...

Maximum velocity of fluid in pipe

Use guidelines with caution and an open mind. Typically 5 to 7 fps are used for pressurized lines and 3 to 5 fps for drain lines. Don't get bent out of shape if it goes above 7. All is correct that you use more energy as the pressure goes up, but it is also dependant on the run length. The...

    Tube & hose failures

Thanks for your response. I agree with you that it's a bad precedent. Unfortunately, it's also light crab grass in your neighbor's lawn, bad for him and you, but difficult to control once it gets started. The problem I'm having is stopping it, or at least not letting it spread any further...

    Tube & hose failures

Thanks for your response. We have checked the chem. compatibility & for the most case less than 1/2 the stuff we use the plain R3603. One of the things we discovered is that the supplier had been substituting unbranded tubing in some cases for R3603 even when our purchase reqs called out the...

    Tube & hose failures

Our plant has several places where plastic tubing (typically Tygon) has been used to temporarily connect 2 lenghts of pipe. This has been done when piping mods were required and the pipe fitters couldn't weld or thread the pipe (due to many reasons). These are low pressure situations (<15...

    Chilled Water vs. DX

I was trying to be brief. When I said DX, I meant an air-refridg-air system. When I said CW, I meant an air-refridg-water-air system. In both cases, we will be using steam to provide heat in cold weather. I've asked a couple of our plant HVAC guys, one got upset that I asked, the other said...
