    Metric Gear sources

Hey everyone, I'm doing up a drawing set for a machine that came into our shop, but I don't know where to find information on the gearing. I know they are metric gears, but the only information I have on them are: the gear has 72 teeth and an approximate outside diameter of about 14-1/2"...

    Algor V17 - Modelling a press frame

I think that would help a lot GBor, what did you have in mind? You are right about the top and bottom forming bowls, and the support beams will form sideways bowls (if that makes sense). This picture shows it in an exaggerated way of how it should look after the loads are applied...

    Algor V17 - Modelling a press frame

Hey GBor! Thanks a lot for your help, if I lived near you I would definately owe you a case of beer. This isn't my setup, but it is very similar to what I have done: http://www.skibuilders.com/howto/equip/press02.jpg That might help you see better what surfaces are being loaded. The...

    Algor V17 - Modelling a press frame

Hey GBor, Thanks for the help! When I said that the support I-beams (the 2 beams at the ends holding the 4 beams apart) are facing the wrong way, I meant that they were turned in the weak direction. The top and bottom beams are flexing away from the centre, and I know that these two support...

    Algor V17 - Modelling a press frame

Whoops, sorry. Maybe these will work. http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mcfetric/detail?.dir=f499&.dnm=4bcfscd.jpg&.src=ph http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mcfetric/detail?.dir=f499&.dnm=e819scd.jpg&.src=ph

    Algor V17 - Modelling a press frame

Hello, I was just wondering if someone could help me set up the model for this? I have a frame with a distributed load across it. I'm just trying to simulate my case accurately, it doesn't have to be super technical or anything. I drew the frame in Solid Edge, saved it as a .stp file, and...

Designing a beam (repeated, one direction stress)

GBor, Thanks for responding. I calculated (using the worst case of the beam being simply supported) that the maximum stress would be 15000 psi. Are there Goodman curves for various materials available online? I searched but I couldn't find one, or do I have to develop the goodman curve myself?

Designing a beam (repeated, one direction stress)

Hey everyone, I have a steel W10x49 beam with a distributed pressure of 80 psi being applied to it (over a length of 90"). The beam is fixed at both ends. The pressure is applied and is held anywhere from 30 min to 12 hours. I was looking through a machine design book (Mott) and it looked...

Model, size, and # of heaters to use for heating a press

Hey everyone, I've had a few posts on here about building a pneumatic press for making skis/snowboards, and ideas on how to heat it. I was talking to some people at Omega, and they said I could use either strip or cartridge heaters (the guy said that I could consider using cartidge heaters...

Using FEA to design a press frame

Hello everyone, I had a couple posts on this site about building a press to make skis/snowboards. I have mine built, if you look here ( http://www.grafsnowboards.com/pressidx.htm )and go to either the 6th or 7th picture down, you can see how it basically looks. My buddy wants me to help him...

    Heating a Press

MH, I had actually considered doing something like that, but I didn't know what kind of temperatures I could get and if it was feasible or not. dalcazar, Thanks for that answer. I figured that going with the heat blanket would be cheapest, but I guess I wanted to try to come up with...

    Heating a Press

Thanks for the responses guys. GenB, could you elaborate a bit? What would you use to generate the steam? I looked into small boilers & even HW heaters and they cost too much. The press is made with steel I-beam so I'm not too worried about the extra pressure from the steam. Also, would you...

    Heating a Press

Hey guys, I had another post on how I'm building a press for making skis/snowboards ( http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=138318 ). If you go to this page http://www.grafsnowboards.com/pressidx.htm and go to either the 6th or 7th picture down, you can see how it basically looks. I...

    Building a ski/snowboard press

Hi everyone, I have decided to build my own press for making skis/snowboards. There is a lot of information out there on how to do this: http://www.skibuilders.com/ , http://www.grafsnowboards.com/ These sites are a lot of trial and error, so I wanted to take more of an Engineering approach...

crosspost- Indoor Solar Heated Swimming Pool

So I've decided that the system won't work in the winter, but I was trying to figure out the max temp rise I could get in the winter, using either anti-freeze or water running through the collectors (I'm either going to supplement the system with a heater, or just bypass the solar all together...

    Indoor Solar Heated Swimming Pool

Hey Old Dave, I found this system on the this website http://www.powermat.com/PG5ht.html would this be the type of drainback system I would want to use? I'd prefer this over having to do the whole heat exchanger system shown at the bottom of this page...

    Indoor Solar Heated Swimming Pool

Thanks for the reply. I live in Saskatchewan, so it normally gets down to about -40C some days, and I need to run this in the winter too, so would a drainback system work with just water? Thanks for your help.

crosspost- Indoor Solar Heated Swimming Pool

Thanks for the reply. I'm up here in Saskatchewan, so in the winter it occasionally drops down to around -40C, so that was why I figured I'd need to use some sort of antifreeze. If I had the piping insulated enough, would I be able to get by without using glycol & a heat exchanger? Thanks for...

crosspost- Indoor Solar Heated Swimming Pool

Hey guys, I did a search on here, but I still need some help so I thought I'd post. I was thinking of putting an indoor swimming pool in my new home, and I want to compare solar heating it with natural gas. The pool would probably be 10m long x 7m wide, with a depth varying from 1m to 3m...
