it sounds like you have not used a cap on the reset pin of the 555 timer. a 1uF will do the trick. it is also good practice to put a smoothing cap on vcc+ to prevent spuriouse triggering. hope this helps. you can read more on 555 circuits by going to 'google.com' and searching for '555 timer...
