    A simple statics question

I would like your opinion on the following: Consider 2 ft. long outrigger 3x3 angles @ 24” centers. One end of the outriggers is fixed and the other end is free. At the free end of all outriggers there is a continuous Unistrut channel supporting a moving track with a hung load of 2 Kips say...

    Structural design in sub-zero temperatures

I like your sense of humour Watermelon. That's the kind of response that would always get me in trouble with the teaching staff in high school ... I miss those days.

Structural steel design in sub-zero temperatures

Beaver12, The building is actually being constructed in Ontario, Canada. The entire structure is a freezer building, so I cannot consider the "inside out" concept, otherwise all structural steel will be exposed. We are thinking of designing the entire building out of heavy timber...

Structural steel design in sub-zero temperatures

Thanks for the responses so far. You are correct jheidt2543 about insulating the floor. Below the slab on grade, we have 6" rigid insulation on a sand bed that is heat traced. The steel columns go through all this sub-grade onto the concrete piers below. But the column base plates...

Structural steel design in sub-zero temperatures

The operating temperature is -50 deg F (not +50)! That's definitely below freezing. Based on the size of the building, we have calculated a shrinkage of 1.5 inches.

Structural steel design in sub-zero temperatures

I have to design a small 15,000 sq. ft. single storey freezer building. (25 ft. height steel building with metal roof deck and insulated wall panels). The operating temperature inside will be -50 deg F (-45 Celcius). Assuming summer construction, the differential temperature will be in...

    Curving HSS sections

Thanks for the suggestions. It's interesting that fabricators can only roll HSS 8x8x.5 or 6x4x0.375 as the closest members to an 8x3 (and the rolling process costs more than the steel)

    Curving HSS sections

An architect has requested a curved rectangular HSS 8x3 (curved against the 8" depth) with a 20 ft radius. I have checked with a few steel fabricators and non can accomplish this. Any suggestions (that will not be too costly to do)?
