    All Around Weld Symbol

Agree with eliminating ambiguity. So, maybe turn the fillet symbol around...?:) Dan

    Stiling Well

Over time without holes along the length of the well you wind up with the characteristics of the fluid inside the well being different from the fluid outside. It could make your hand cuts for gravity, density, whatever, or your ATG less accurate. DB

    Line type question

When indicating that two (or more) hole centers are aligned, is the extension line between them drawn as a centerline or a solid line? For example if three mounting holes on one side of an item are directly aligned with three others on the other side, what kind of line goes between them to...

Take me to hardware school please

Kenat, 6061-T6. btrueblood, we're inside in a well air conditioned space--very well air conditioned. Dan

Take me to hardware school please

I've found yet another scenario. This one shows grade 8 bolts securing an aluminum rack to a steel platform. Can you fully torque or pre-tension grade 8 hardware with aluminum on one side? Dan

Take me to hardware school please

These are bolts to hold equipment racks on their foundations. I knew the class 3 was a more precise thread but didn't know if there was an engineering reason that mixing them was somehow superior. Meanwhile, I've found a Grade 8 class 2 bolt specified. Is that one available? I thought the...

Take me to hardware school please

I've been noticing on some outline and installation drawings for electronic equipment onboard a ship the specification of -2A bolts and -3B self locking nuts for hold-down. The originator is not available to consult. Are class 3 nuts typically used with class 2 bolts. Why or why not? Are...

    Real RS-232 Cable Length Limit

175 cable feet of STP between a PC comm port and the DCE--think it'll work at 9600, at 19.2k? I'm not looking for what the specs say but what your experiences are. Cut sheet for the cable says 40pF/ft @ 1.0 MHz. Dan B

Excess line pressure when pump is shut off

It sounds very much like thermal loading on the product in a closed line. A single degree increase in deg F can raise the pressure scores of psi. Doesn't sound like backpressure from the tank. With diesel you'd have to have about a 140 ft head. Also, pardon my limited mechanical experience...

    Vessel Orientation on Drawing Sheet

Orient everything so a drawing's user is able to read it from either the bottom or from the right side of the sheet. Dan (all caps on drawings) Blackwell

    Lowercase letters on drawings

9960, I didn't mean to come across as a know-it-all. My apologies. My use of the term "dream up" was meant simply to denote thay had specifically included "Hz" in their document in stark contrast to all other abbreviations. All, Y14.2 still says all caps on drawings unless required...

    Lowercase letters on drawings

Not talking about SI symbols in the 260 standard, just abbreviations. And not in manuals, books, papers, etc., just on drawings. In 33 years, I've never seen it on an engineering drawing. I've seen HZ and I've seen HERTZ, but never Hz. Y14.2 says lettering on drawings will always be...

    Lowercase letters on drawings

After 33 years of preparing and reviewing engineering products for the government, I'm working in the "real world" now. I'm in a "discussion" with our drafters who insist that in the term "440VAC/60Hz/3PH" not only is the little bitty illegible "z" OK, but it is "required." Their arguement is...

Does Atmospheric Pressure Count Toward NPSH?

Have you ever seen a pressure indicator in a pump's suction line read below 0 psig and not hear "gravel" running thru the pump? Atmospheric pressure counts. DB
