Cost of operating AC vs. DC

From a maintenace point of view an AC installation is far cheaper, especially if you have a failure of some sort.

    Mini Hydro Scheme

Thank you all for your input, it def does give one quite a bit to think about. I will try and put some answers to the questions posed. I agree, my calcs put me in the region of roughly 200kW aswell, the installation would be on our company premises and due to the fact that we already have...

    Mini Hydro Scheme

yes, i am looking at an induction motor. I actually want to see if i can't use a pump as a turbine and then couple up the motor to run as a generator. This is on a system where we have effluent running away from our mill. It drops a total of roughly 60 meters and has a flow rate of in the region...

    Mini Hydro Scheme

Is there any limitation in the size motor which can be used as a generator other than physical size? I understand that by driving a motor above synchronous speed it will start acting as a generator, providing it has a magnetic field set up via some reactive energy, but can you use this approach...

Broke and in need of an education

if costs are the major problem, look at a couple of places around the world which have been accredited to the "Washington Accord" and see if their costs are comparible to what you are currently paying. Just don't underestimate the importance of a quality degree as this is going to be your...

    Motor Capacity Vs Load

Keep in mind that it also depends on what you are actually driving. For a pump, for example, the pump curve would give you all the info you need in terms of load requirements etc.

    Do motors get "tired"?

I have had a similar problem in my plant, we found that the speed of the motor was too high which in turn affected the torque we needed. We replaced our 6 pole motor with a 4 pole one which increased the avaialable torque. we also needed to include some supports for the screw as due to the...

What is fail-safe design of switchgear control and relaying

Fail safe itself refers to a safe condition being achieved under failed conditions. This can vary depending on the application, just ask yourself, from a safety point of view what condition must occur should there be a failed condition? This will enable you to then decide on how the system...

    Drive power query

Thanks all for your replies, the drives are in a controlled environment, which includes air conditioning, air purification and room pressurization. We monitored the power quality on start up and there were no surges which occurred, while the supply was within the required range.

    Drive power query

Hi gents, We have a number of ABB AC drives in my mill. Having had a recent shut for 4 weeks we are now experiencing a number of drive related problems a few days after starting up eg: Power Caps blowing, control cards being damaged and needing to be changed etc. With consistant powering down...

    Marks on bearing

Hey Feg, if it came out of your stores and gave problems right away then it might be worth checking with them if they are storing the motors correctly and rotating the shafts as often as they should to prevent any bearing damage from occuring.

    Eddy current query

Morning Gents, i have a 3 phase, 400V AC system. i want to use two 185mm single core cables per phase in the terminal box, i am however concerned about eddy current. should the gland plate be made from a non metallic substance e.g bakalite and what is the minimum distance between the cables to...

    running wet tranformer dry

edison123, purely an indication of the oil changing colour to the next level. Belive it or not i have actually been challenged on the fact that the oil was not exactly the correct colour to warrant concern.

    running wet tranformer dry

Here is a bsaic colour chart to look at, which will give you a rough indication on what colour your oil should be and what it tells you of the oil conditionhttp://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=d6cf6adc-cbea-4703-b333-9990a029e8f4&file=Oil_Colour_Chart.doc

Can a ball bearing destroy a refiner plate?

When the plates were inspected prior to commissioning there was no ball bearing present, it seems to be a foreign body. From the evidence found it is our opinion that the centre locking cap screw securing the drive sleeve of the rotating disc to the shaft was not tightened properly, this in-turn...

Can a ball bearing destroy a refiner plate?

Afternoon Gents, We had a recent failure of one of our refiners, which literally destroyed the refiner plates. upon closer inspection we found a tiny ball bearing lodged in the pieces of the plate. our supplier is adament it caused the failure, i however doubt it. there are no signs of rubbing...

    running wet tranformer dry

Mineral oil is the most common insulating medium and provides four functions that contribute to the operation of a transformer: •Dielectric strength – acts as a dielectric and insulating material. •Heat Transfer – acts as a cooling medium. •Protection – acts as a barrier between the paper and...

    220vac 1p to 110vac 1p

come now, simple answer...use a transformer! we all know the reason for the ground wire and it is def not there to carry your load.

    annual cost of electric motor

are you charged different tariffs for different periods throughout the year? (summer vs winter tariff) if so then it might be an easier "sell" to justify running it in the period where your electricity costs would most benefit your goal.
