can of worms by the sound of it, maybe this will help? www.boltscience.com just as an interesting point, automotive engineers never use lubricant on bolts. they are used straight out of the box (either zinc plate and passivate or phosphated). Why? ask the other guys - they seem very keen...- kelv

Refurbishment of hard chrome plating
I can only suggest that 'mechanical keying' is the issue here gcb. Basically, chrome (as does any surface coating/treatment) likes a good base and will not tolerate contamination - adding chrome over an old or partly worn chromed surface will risk the new surface flaking off.- kelv
