NBC-2015 loads for ASME VIII-1 vessel supports

Hello everyone, Is anyone aware of industry guidance that discusses how to apply wind/seismic loads from the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) to the design of ASME VIII-1 pressure equipment? The issue I'm dealing with centers around the different design basis of the two codes. NBC-2015...

    API 570 Para. 8.2.8(d) - Grammar Interpretation

Hey everyone, Grammar question here for interpreting codes... API-570 paragraph 8.2.8(d) - associated with closure welds: d) MT or PT shall be performed on the root pass and the completed weld for butt welds and on the completed weld for fillet welds. Question: for socket weld closure welds...

Use of Standard Flanges (WNRF/SORF) instead of Girth Flanges for Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger:-

As these are BEU style heat exchangers, you're going to have a pass partition plate in there somewhere. Take a read of Paragraph UHX-4(b), you may have a hard time using standard B16.5 flanges. Cheers,

Crude Column Failures During In-Service Repairs (weldstan?)

Re: thread794-420069 In the thread linked above, weldstan stated: Does anyone have any references to column failures that occurred due to in-service weld repairs? I did some online digging and nothing jumped out at me. Thanks, Marty

B16.5 Blind Flange - Best Practices

Thank you everyone, I think I understand where to go with this. I'm still new to the world of in-service inspection. I'll need to be careful with my wording in the long-term. ;) I'm already signed-up for a course starting in May. I'm really looking forward to it, and getting some early...

In service inspection - nozzle t-min

Hey everyone, I was reviewing some in-service inspection t-min values for an ASME VIII-1 vessel. Currently we are setting the initial t-min value for piping nozzles as t-nom - CA. For a 12"-sch.120 piping nozzle with 1/8" CA for example, this would be 1" - 0.125" = 0.875". When the nozzle neck...

B16.5 Blind Flange - Best Practices

Very clear and concise. I think this approach cleanly follows all code rules. I don't think this approach follows the codes. Take this to the extreme and think about a 1/2" CL150 blind flange with t=0.38"+RF=0.44". If you have a corrosion allowance of 1/4", your blind would be reduced to 0.19"...

B16.5 Blind Flange - Best Practices

I dug through many old threads hunting for the best path forward to handling inspection for B16.5 blind flanges, and can't find any solid recommendations. I'll lay out the issue, and provide some discussion, but I would love to hear how you all approach this issue. When blinding a standard...

    SA-479-317L isn't in ASME BPVC.II.D 2019?

Many times I can find dual certified bar/forgings to SA-479/SA-182 for materials such as 304/316ss. You might be able to find a forged bar to SA-182-F317L?

Reverse flange weld size - Compress / ASME VIII-1 (2019)

Thank you all for your responses. Geoff13, I think you've accidently stumbled across a key change in the code wording! In 2017 paragraph UW-13(e)(2) was: (2) For flange rings of bolted flanged connections, the sum of a and b shall be not less than three times the nominal wall thickness of the...

Reverse flange weld size - Compress / ASME VIII-1 (2019)

It's been a long while since I designed equipment utilizing a reverse flange. We use Compress for our design calculations, and I was surprised by the specified weld size they came up with. I brought this up with Compress and they referenced a code paragraph that I'm not sure applies. I'd love to...

Fabricated lap joint stub-end - fillet weld size

We fabricate very few lethal service vessels, and I don't think I've ever designed one with lap joints... interesting reference! Thanks, Marty

Fabricated lap joint stub-end - fillet weld size

I've been having some disagreements with colleagues regarding fillet weld sizing on the back-side of fabricated lap joint stub-ends for use with standard ASME B16.5 lap joint flanges on ASME VIII-1 equipment. Any other perspectives would be much appreciated. Perspective #1: ASME B16.9 Table...

Missing ASME Nameplate and U1 Form

Is the original manufacturer still in business? If so, I'd recommend your first course of action should be to contact them and ask if they have any documentation remaining. If so, they may be able to provide a copy of the U-1 form, and could generate a replacement nameplate (per NBIC).

Mesh size dependance of ASME Div.2 analysis for elastic stress method

One resource I've used in the past is AB-520 (Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Requirements Regarding the Use of FEA to Support a Pressure Equipment Design Submission) from the Alberta boiler branch (ABSA). They discuss the following approach in the section titled Presentation of Results...

WHAT SHALL BE VESSEL EXTERNAL PRESSURE VALUE MENTION ON NAME PLATE AS PER ASME VIII DIV.1

Agree with SnTMan Just a small clerical comment - the term MAEWP was dropped in the ASME VIII-1 code in the 2013 code edition. Proper terminology is now to refer to it as MAWP Internal or MAWP External. The acronym MAEWP should no longer be stamped on a nameplate, instead you should be...

minimum thickness and MAWP calculation for pipe bends

The intrados/extrados calculations will result in three different required thicknesses for the pipe after bending. [ol 1] Internal surface of the bend: t-min = (244.9687*2.37)/2[(20000*1*0.86/1.32)+(244.9687*0.4] = ti (t-internal) External surface of the bend: t-min =...
