Doubling the air flow-rate across an evaporator coil

Another useful bit, Compositepro, thanks. This is looking less and less like a clever idea! I live in SoCal where humidity is an infrequent problem in the hot months (at most 5-6 days a year) do you think this would affect my "net" comfort as much in SoCal?

Doubling the air flow-rate across an evaporator coil

Great post dbill, thanks very much. I had not thought of the condensation issue. Certainly could be a problem and I wouldn't know how to manage it. The filters I am not concerned about as I have oversized everything, including the filters. I am curious about your airflow equation. The...

Doubling the air flow-rate across an evaporator coil

Thanks Ed. The system is undersized to begin with. 2.5 Tons at SEER 12 for 3,480 sq ft. I focused on efficiency in the register layout and in the insulation of the system. But the blower does run at max all the time in cooling mode. willard, The bigger blower can only increase airflow so I...

Doubling the air flow-rate across an evaporator coil

Thanks Doug115. That's what I am thinking (half the cooling with twice the airflow equals the same heat exchange). I have examined the schematics and the current blower is already at maximum in cooling mode.

Doubling the air flow-rate across an evaporator coil

Years ago I masqueraded as a mechanical engineer and designed my own home HVAC dual zone duct and register system. One my buddies who is a mech, loaned me his "ductillator", and with the help of these forums, I proceeded to oversize my ducts and registers to about 3x the system size as I wanted...

Plugging a simple ac-ac transformer (wall power pack) into an inexpensive UPS

A little out of my league here but I would think harmonics would cause the power transformer to heat more and possibly fail prematurely. The UPS is a simple, personal computer style unit (such as an APS) and is not true sine wave. We are talking maybe 30% distortion. The power pack is about...

Who determined to use green for open and red for closed in breakers ?

The beer is still in the middle of the table and getting warm. Really, no one here has a definitive answer? The two contenders in this thread, IMHO, are: A COMBINATION OF: Tommy75 with the Navy SOP explanation and DPC with the "it's only a convention" ===OR=== The fable of "How...

Satellite heat pump coil- does it exist?

I picked up a Carrier satellite heat pump (38BK024300 2-ton) at a local salvage yard. I wanted to know if anybody has heard of a heat-pump coil that would work woth this unit. Normally it goes with these whigh wall mount satellite fan coils. I would like to utilize this heat pump with a...

AS-i to Westinghouse Ovation Trouble! Help!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. At this point the contractor could not find a definitive cause of the trouble. Even though the AS-i segments only control "balance of plant" equipment (such as boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, transformers), the contractor, to their credit has...

    Residential Duct Balancing: HOW TO?

I have manual dampers for each room at the supply plenums. I just have no idea how to balance them. Can anyone recommend an easy step by step process? The entire house is one zone. Thanks!

AS-i to Westinghouse Ovation Trouble! Help!

Yeah, sorry. The RS-232 length is only about five feet.

AS-i to Westinghouse Ovation Trouble! Help!

440 Megawatts of power dropped off line today during commission testing of a new power plant. The problem, using historical data, is largely suspected to be communication failure between an AS-i 2.1 gateway and a Westinghouse Ovation RLC module. At the start of the failure sequence both the...

Worth it to upgrade R4 attic flexible ducting to R12?

I have just installed R4 flexible duct in my rather well ventillated and somewhat isulated attic (radiant roof sheathing). I have a substantial amount of this R4 duct in the attic. Some runs are nearly 20 ft. Would it be worth my while to buy a larger R8 flexible duct product and slip it over...

Want 14 wire with a fixed load on 20A breaker HELP!

Has anyone gotten the permitting authority to buy-off on using 14 wire for the siwtched legs of fixed lighting loads when the system uses No.12 wire and 20A breakers everywhere else? NEC rates 14 at 25A but limits the overcurrent device to 15A. I was thinking that since 14 is rated for 25A and...

Change the coil but not the condensor/compressor

Thanks for all the info guys. But, being an electrical engineer, I got lost towards the end. Can I get a consensus from the panel? Based on the info going from 030 to 042 in the coil will work fine with my 030 compressor?
