Zain,
You can learn about the basics of the principles behind APi620 design calculation by reading one of many reference books. You don't need to be a specialist to do a pressurized tank design: All you need is basic engineering fundamentals and read API620.
Interesting to note a response that...
Metaljon,
Pardon my ignorance but I would like to know what do you mean when you say "pin brinell"? What is that? You don't mean doing microhardness testing such as Vickers, do you?
All parts welded directly to the shell/head needs to be of the same grade and material as the parent shell/head. Hence if a new vessel is PWHT then the entire vessel except for the 'attachments' shall be completly PWHT together.
I can attest to the good quality from Larsen & Toubro in India. In my past I had worked with them on 8" thick Div 2 vessels and they were OK. Like everything, you must include enough money to go there to QA their work and have good technical kick-off meetings to ensure they understand what you...
I read this with interest. I don't think everyone has replied completly to tankerator's question.
Assuming his nozzle is not a flush type. So, if he chooses to use a repad and his shell insert plate of Group I,II,III/IIIA is less than 1" thick, and the nozzle is not larger than 12", then he...
Hi,
The new Addendum 2, Appendix F.4.1 for the max design pressure, definition for the participating roof thickness to now include some kind of composite roof. I have never seen a "stiffened" roof plates as described in the new text. What exactly are they refering to? All the self-supported...
There is no calculations for the bottom plate. The floor is just a min of 6mm as good practice.
However, if you actually mean the annular ring then according to a text book I read long time ago clarified that the annular ring is sized as a cantilevered beam (fixed at the bot shell to ring...
Yes, I just downloaded the new addendum 2 and noticed that just about every pages has revision lines on them. This is just like Mickysoft softwares: rush to get it out and fix it later with patches!
This tanks standard used to be so simple to understand and use. Now, it is turning into a...
Hi,
I went to API's web site looking for errata for the 11th Ed, Addendum1, but found none so I thought some of you might be able answer this simple question.
I think there is a typo in 5.10.2.6, first paragraph. I believe the last sentence was meant to say "When a Purchaser....a frangible...
Am I to understand that it is typical to spray on an insulating coating as the mean to make an insulated baffle? On a F-shell with fixed baffle and a removable U-tube bundle, I can see the sprayed-on coating could be damaged during extraction/insertion.
Thanks to both for your input. I should've qualify that my question is pertaining to a fix tubesheet design, hence no pulling of bundle. I agree with moltenmental about limiting removable bundle to 20'.
gr2vessels brought up a good point which I did not thought of. large L/D shell can have...
Hi all,
Are there any negative issues that I should be aware of in regards to slender HX, ie., shell length is much greater than diameter, lets say L/D > 5.
I have no concern with thermal design for long and slender hx shape but from a mechanical perspective, too long and slender a vessel the...
I have worked on F-shells with fixed and removable longitudinal baffle but have never seen an insulated baffle. Can anyone explain or direct me to a site with a drawing or photo to show me how this “insulating” feature is done? Is it by an air gap between two welded plate spaced 3mm apart or...
If your tank is not anchored and you have an internal pressure then your shell might be subject to uplifting with or without additional wind uplift loading. You must do the calcualtions to check this otherwise you will damage the bottom shell to floor weld and then you're in big trouble...
I have a similar low NPSHA water pump application and Operations keep saying they don't want vertical canned pump but can't give me any good reason other than "bad maintenance". Typical operator response without any good technical input on the source of the problem.
I too would like to know...
Thanks to the replies. Yes, 11th is out and I just got a copy today at the office. I'd review it next week but would've been nice to have a quick summary from API or somebody like that...
Hi all,
I looked in API's web site and could not find any information on what changes occured in API610 from 10th to 11th ed. Can anyone suggest where I can find a quick summary to review. I do not have the 11th ed yet but just like to get a heads up. thanks.
In sour service, the typical practice is to confirm parent metal hardness before acceptance of plate or pipe product. MR0175/ISO15156 7.3.2 provides for this but does not specify where and frequency of hardness testing. For plate product (this would include ESW pipe product) my memory...
Hi,
I have seen insulation specs calling out mineral fibre insulation per ASTM C547 and C553 for service up to 450°C since the 80s. Now, I read one EPC's spec on insulation saying mineral fibre insulation shall only be use up to 230°C because the binder in the insulation will break down above...
