Hi
I have a failure analysis of a pump shaft made from 416 SS. It survived for a very long time (> 15 years), then suddenly showed signs of corroding. It has been removed from service, and is highly pitted. Corrosion product inside pits shows small amounts of Cl, Ni, S and high levels of Mn...
Would anyone know why cold-formed bends exhibit axial tears after bending?
The tears are not on the bends, but just before them on the straight portion.
There are plenty tooling marks on the external surfaces.
What are they doing wrong with regards to the bending process?
Unfortunately, I cannot post the microstructures. The material was not ordered to any specification (such as ASTM A 564), but rather just as 17-4 PH. Very bad, but customers just won't listen.
I have a failed shaft constructed from 17-4 PH. The fracture surface is brittle or mixed-mode. I did Charpy impact tests at room temperature, which gives a ductile fracture appearance. When tested at 0 deg C, it has a brittle fracture appearance. The tensile properties are strange, with a high...
