    Punching angles prior to rolling.

Just an update. We punched a trial piece of angle. It didn't crack but we did get a small amount of thinning between the edge of the hole and the toe of the angle. I don't know my customer's usage so I sent them pictures and asked for their blessing. On the vertical leg there is an ever so...

    Punching angles prior to rolling.

I should have mentioned that these are 7/8" x 1 7/8" slots so that gives me some amount of tolerance. However you've given me concern over the cracking aspect. I think we'll do a test piece. I'd still like to now that formula if anyone has it. Thanks, Scotty

    Punching angles prior to rolling.

I'm looking for the formula to calculate the hole layout for a large angle flange punched prior to rolling. The angle is 3" x 3" x 1/4" rolled leg out to a 60" inside radius with holes in the outstanding leg on a 2" gauge.I know the spaces will stretch some since they're outside the neutral...

    Reinforcing ring

hokie66 I have not. We're not AISC members, so I'm not familiar with a Solutions Centre. How does that work?

    Reinforcing ring

IFRs It is indeed a lack of ductility, due to the elevated yields and tensiles, but we just can't get the A36 material anymore. Whenever we're rolling a large angle like this, it's always an incremental process that will require several passes. If you try to roll a bunch of angles like this in...

    Reinforcing ring

dhengr, Thanks for the suggestions, but my fracturing doesn't occur at the corner of the heel. The angle is 5" x 3 1/2" x 3/8" with the 5" leg rolled in. The fractures occur 3/8" down from the true heel of the angle, straight across from the inside face of the leg. Anytime your rolling angles...

    Reinforcing ring

Ok, you've convinced me that an angle may indeed be the best compromise, but let me give some back ground as to why I'm seeking an alternative. We've rolled these angles successfully for a customer for about twenty years. Life was all good when everything was just A-36 material. Then along...

    Reinforcing ring

Thanks for the explanation, but.... If you use a flat bar you still have the tank wall's contribution to the equation. Then if you use a bar with a high section modulus, but a lighter weight than the angle, don't you achieve the same thing and also save material at the same time?

    Reinforcing ring

I need an education concerning a reinforcing ring around a a waste water tank. The current design calls for a rolled angle with one toe welded to the outside of the tank wall and one leg vertically down. Common enough design. My question is, what does the vertical leg bring to the party...

    A572-gr50 Angle Fracturing

Sorry, I failed to mention this is being rolled to a 28' radius. I keep a history book and we've rolled this same size as small as a 4'-6" radius in the past. That seems like a huge difference in the material's ability to withstand the stress. The supplier is coming Monday, and they're trying...

    A572-gr50 Angle Fracturing

I work for a fab shop where we have successfully rolled 5" x 3 1/2" x 3/8" angle with the 5" leg in for a good customer for many, many years. Years ago of course it was all A-36. Now it's all coming in with multiple certifications and the expected higher yields and tensiles. On two out of our...
