I would like to thanks Lothar for his help on this. His suggestion worked great. Here is what you need to do (in Windows XP):
1. Right-Click your desktop, then click on PROPERTIES.
2. Go to the APPEARANCE tab and click on EFFECTS.
3. Remove the check mark on USE THE FOLLOWING METHOD TO SMOOTH...

Thanks for your comments. I am using Acad 2002. I too used to use a light background but it got tough on my eyes after a while. Wish there was a way to make the font constant on the editor. Of course that would inhibit the ablility to see the true fonts being used in the drawing, but one can...
