    Weird bearing failure mode

Thanks for the ideas. This turned out to be heat treat defect in the ball. A failure that was not able to be replicated when tested with more name brand bearings. Lesson learned: Don't let purchasing source bearings just anywhere :)

    Weird bearing failure mode

I've just witnessed a ball bearing failure that I've never seen before. The ball elements failed (not either race). They appeared to crumble. They were split open in two or more pieces each with a brittle looking fracture surface. It was on every ball. This happened at very low life. It is...

To all my Civil Engineering friends! (Specifically those working on roads/bridges)

I primarily work on mobile equipment powertrain (I break the road). Depending on the complexity, I am confident that I can cover some other areas. The expectation was that it would be a short term, part time deal. I think this may actually be for a toll road.

To all my Civil Engineering friends! (Specifically those working on roads/bridges)

Hello, I am a mechanical engineer with a PE licence, and was contacted by a civil engineer friend about a highway proposal their company was putting in that asked for the inclusion of a licenced engineer to handle any mechanical design issues. It was not made clear what this may be, and my...

Material Selection: Clear polymer for site glass

Yes my first thought was to eliminate the ability of debris to get to it. Also, I confirmed that the customer actually values this feature. I have some ideas for surrounding geometry changes that could shield this part, but an improved site glass would be quickest to implement. I like your...

Material Selection: Clear polymer for site glass

I have an application where we have seen failures on a site glass due to external material (dirt/rocks) impacts. The site glass is ~1" in diameter and made of Borosilicate. Apparently this is essentially "Pyrex". I would like to move towards another material that is more impact resistent...
