I agree with ztengguy. I had a similar project and columned down to a solid foundation to eliminate the stone variable. Once the stone was reset, you would have never known a column was placed.

I would recommend a mechanical splice on the bars. I would assume the cost of the mechanical splice would be cheaper than the labor to chip the concrete. Just my opinion, but both are acceptable options.
