will nickel coating metal springs increase the stiffness?

Hi, I received the springs today. I thought we were getting 5 mil coating but it turned out that is was actually 5 microns thick which is 0.000196850394 inches according to google. The wire thickness hasn't changed much but it increased by 0.001" and I think it is because of my caliper. Anyhow...

will nickel coating metal springs increase the stiffness?

5 mils is 0.005 inch from what i know. i suppose changing the thickness from 0.1620" to 0.1670" must have some impact on the stiffness. we;ll be getting coated springs on friday and it should be interesting to compare the test result once we get them. thanks everyone for comments,

will nickel coating metal springs increase the stiffness?

the wire diameter is 0.1620". is 5 mil alot for coating? im new to all these coating stuff im working on and still learning.

will nickel coating metal springs increase the stiffness?

Hi, My boss is getting nickel coatings on metal springs with the thickness of 5 mils. This is only 0.005". My boss thinks getting nickel plate coating on springs will increase the stiffness. However, I am not so sure if 0.005" of nickel coating will have any significant impact on the spring...

Cadmium plated bolt vs Sodium Hypochlorite?

Hi, I am trying to find if Cadmium plated bolt can be used in the environment where sodium hypochlorite presents. I can't find any information regarding Cadmium's corrosion resistance on web. Every website states that Cadmium finishing has excellent corrosion resistance but there is no detail...

Higher silicon contents in Hastelloy C276?

We just got SGS's test result from our Hastelloy C276 rods supplier and the test result shows 0.2% of silicon contents in the alloy. The standard spec says the maximum silicon contents is 0.08%. The spec on the website also says "The undiluted deposited chemical composition of alloy C-276...

looking for weldable, anodizeable castable metal alloys?

Thank you for the comments! How about 5xx series? It seems like they are both weldable and anodizeable. I am thinking about A520 since it is the strongest in the family with a yield strength of 180Mpa. Would this be a good choice? I am having hard time finding mechanical properties of aluminum...

looking for weldable, anodizeable castable metal alloys?

I need yield strength of at least 200MPa. The part I am designing will only experience compressive loads.

looking for weldable, anodizeable castable metal alloys?

Hi, I am looking for castable metal alloy that can be welded as well as anodized. Aluminum 712 seem to be good choices from what I've researched so far. Is there any other choice of metal alloys? I would appreciate any comment or thought! Thanks,

    Designing a rotameter ?

Thanks Engdoitbetter, I've looked up ASME PTC 19.5 but the document doesn't have any information about the design of rotameters. Is there any other ASME document regarding variable area flow meters? Thanks,

    Designing a rotameter ?

Hi, I am working on a project for designing different flow meters. I am designing a rotameter alone. I did some homework and studied equations about fluid meters and mechanics but I am still not sure of where to begin. The principle is simple but all the articles I've read only explains basic...

    choosing material for threaded rods??

eh I forgot to mention the important requirements. Service temperature is room temperature 70'F(21'C) and maximum target temperature of 500'F(260'C). I am looking for ones with water/salt water/steam resistance. Thanks

    choosing material for threaded rods??

Hi, I need yield tensile strength of 95k~120kpsi for 7/16" threaded rod or 60~75kpsi for 1/2" threaded rod. I would prefer smaller sizes but I can't find material with enough tensile strength. Another thing I am considering is corrosive resistance. Can anyone give me any advice on choosing the...

How do I calculate the force on a threaded rod?

rb1957/ for better of course :) I recently had some time to work on this project and tried to prove the model by adapting the options Cockroach suggested. While I understand adding a washer/nut would help the rod to resist bending stress I am not too sure which equations to mathematically...

    Stress Analysis: Contraint/contact for threads?

Hi, I am trying to do stress analysis with a threaded rod and a plate. I manually cut threads to model real threads so that I can figure out how much force it can withstand without deformation. Please refer the screenshot I attached. The plate should be able to move up and down as the rod...

How do I calculate the force on a threaded rod?

I realize my question was very poorly described and not enough information was given to solve the problem.I was just hoping to get some heads up. ... Next time I;ll make sure I provide every piece of information when I ask a question. Yes I am a fresh graduate[smarty] and have no real...

How do I calculate the force on a threaded rod?

Just one more questions, is there any website I can find properties of different materials? Every website gives me different data and I don't know which one is the most liable one. Like this one http://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=965 says yield strength of 304 SS is 205MPa (30kpsi)...

How do I calculate the force on a threaded rod?

Hi Cockroach, This is for a project I am currently working on. I realize this is a very simple problem but I wasn't familiar with the equation for thread engagement so I wasn't sure where I could begin. I think I know what I am going to do from here. Thanks![smile]
